Mumbai Rail Network Expands: Panvel-Karjat Corridor To Cut Travel Time By 30 Minutes
Mumbai is set to welcome its fifth rail corridor on the Central Railway in just a year's time, according to a Hindustan Times (HT) report. This new line will connect Panvel and Karjat, two crucial points in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Railway sources have revealed that 67 per cent of the work on the 30-kilometres-long corridor is complete, including the construction of three tunnels spanning over three kilometres.
This corridor is part of the ambitious Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) Phase 3. The Rs 2,782-crore project, being implemented by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC), is expected to be ready by December 2025. Designed for suburban local trains, it will feature double lines aimed at improving connectivity and supporting the Maharashtra government's vision of a USD 300-billion economy for MMR by 2028.
The Panvel-Karjat rail corridor emphasises sustainable development and modern engineering while addressing environmental concerns. "With the new airport and plans for a 'Third Mumbai' in the region, this rail link will be vital in supporting new housing and commercial projects," said a railway official in HT.
Currently, the population density in MMR areas beyond Mumbai is approximately 4,878 people per square kilometre, with 500 square kilometres of land available for development. Long-term plans project over three million new homes in the region by 2041.
Land acquisition for the project is complete, with 56.82 hectares of private land and 4.4 hectares of government land secured. Stage I forest clearances have been approved, allowing work in forested areas to progress. Over two million cubic metres of earthwork have been completed for the corridor.
Breakthroughs have been achieved in all three tunnels, with 3,100 metres of underground excavation completed. Major progress has also been made on the 47 bridges required for the line, including 29 minor and six major structures. A critical underpass on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been constructed, involving a complex girder launch over eight lanes of the highway.
Key stations along the corridor, including Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk, and Karjat, are seeing rapid construction progress. Facilities such as platforms, foot overbridges, and administrative buildings are also advancing steadily.
The tunnels, including the 2,265-metre Wavarle tunnel, boast innovative features such as ballastless tracks, public refuge areas, and advanced safety systems. The corridor will reduce travel time between Karjat and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus by 20-30 minutes.
"This rail line will make travel more convenient and support growing commuter demand," said Subhash Chand Gupta, MRVC Chairman and Managing Director in the report. Local railway advocates, such as Madhu Kotian of the Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh, have expressed hope that the project will be completed on time and bring much-needed relief to the region's commuters.
