Mumbai Metro's New Revenue Drive: Advertisements To Transform Mono Trains
In an effort to boost revenue and mitigate financial losses, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is introducing a new advertising scheme for the Mono rail network. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Mumbai Monorail Operations and Control Limited (MMMOCL) to increase income from various sources.
Advertising On Mono Trains

Under this new plan, advertisements will be displayed on both the exterior and interior of Mono trains. This includes a significant 9300 square metre area across 18 trains operating on the Chembur to Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk line, which stretches 20 kilometres and serves 18 stations. The advertising contract will be awarded for a period of five years, with the contractor responsible for paying MMMOCL for this space.
Current Operations
Currently, eight trains operate on this Mono line, with six trains in service on the route, one train reserved for operational requirements, and another for repairs. Trains run every 15 minutes, catering to approximately 18,000 passengers daily. However, the operating costs of the line exceed the revenue generated from ticket sales, placing financial strain on MMRDA.
Additional Revenue Streams
To address these financial challenges, MMMOCL is exploring various revenue-generating strategies. Apart from advertising, they are considering the sale of naming rights for stations and vacant advertising spaces at the stations. These measures are intended to supplement income and reduce the financial burden on MMRDA.
As part of their efforts to enhance service, MMMOCL plans to introduce 10 additional new trains to the Mono route. The new advertising contracts are expected to play a crucial role in offsetting the high capital expenditure of Rs 3025 crores incurred in setting up the Mono rail network. The expected daily passenger volume on this route ranges from 1,50,000 to 2,00,000.
This advertising initiative marks a significant step in MMMOCL's strategy to improve the financial viability of the Mumbai Monorail system and reduce its dependency on external funding.
