MMR’s New Highway To Connect Kalyan, Navi Mumbai, And International Airport; Details Inside
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is set to benefit from a new controlled-access highway aimed at enhancing connectivity between key cities, including Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Ambarnath, and Badlapur, and Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, according to a Times Now report.
In a major development, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has issued a tender for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for the highway's construction.
Project Details
The new highway will begin near Badlapur on the Mumbai-Delhi highway and will connect with major roads such as the Mumbai-Vadodara Spur, Katai-Badlapur Road, and Kalyan Ring Road. The project will feature interchanges at key locations including Palegaon in Ambernath and Hedutane in Kalyan (East), and will also connect to Metro route 12. Additionally, it will link with the Kalyan Ring Road and Kalyan-Shilphata Road.
Tunnel Length: 3 kilometres
Vehicular Underpasses: 5
Interchanges: 4 (Mumbai-Vadodara spur, Badlapur interchange, Hedutane interchange, Kalyan Ring Road interchange)
Land Requirement: 200 hectares
Estimated Project Cost: Rs 10,833 crore
Total Lanes: 8-lane divided carriageway with service lanes, designed for speeds up to 80 kilometres per hour.
Project Significance
The rapid population growth in areas such as Badlapur, Ambernath, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan, and Dombivli has resulted in a growing demand for improved infrastructure. Currently, these areas suffer from limited connectivity to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and the new international airport. This new highway will offer direct access, significantly reducing congestion on roads within the city and easing traffic flow by diverting vehicles from overcrowded routes.
Furthermore, the highway will improve access to the Navi Mumbai International Airport and the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA), providing a vital link to the city's transportation network and aiding in smoother travel for commuters.
The MMRDA's ambitious plan will be an essential step towards addressing traffic concerns in the region while supporting the growth of its rapidly expanding population.
