MHADA Housing Lottery: 56 Applicants For Every Home This Year– What You Need To Know Before The Draw
This year, the response to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) housing lottery in Mumbai has surpassed last year's numbers, according to Hindustan Times (HT). A total of 56 applicants are competing for each home, a significant increase compared to 29 applicants per home last year. The lottery, which offers 2,030 homes, is set to be drawn on October 8 at the Yashwantrao Chavan Centre, Nariman Point.
MHADA received 1,34,350 applications, out of which 1,13,577 were confirmed by deposit payments. Only applicants who make the deposit payment are eligible for the lottery. "Banks are still processing the payments, so the final numbers may increase slightly," said a MHADA official in HT.
Last year's lottery, held for 4,082 tenements, attracted 1,20,144 applicants. This year, the application process began on August 9, and the deadline was extended to September 19. In the final 24 hours before the deadline, MHADA received nearly 27,000 applications. Due to this last-minute surge, MHADA had to deploy additional resources to manage the helpline and handle the slow performance of the lottery portal.
Of the 2,030 tenements available this year, 1,327 were constructed by MHADA's Mumbai Board. An additional 370 units came from developers under Development Control Regulations, and 333 flats carried over from last year remain available. These unsold units either received no applications last year or were left unsold for various reasons.
The homes are divided into four income categories: 359 flats are allocated for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), 627 for the Low-Income Group (LIG), 768 for the Middle-Income Group (MIG), and 276 for the High-Income Group (HIG).
"We need at least 15 days to complete the necessary processing, including scrutinising applications, publishing the final eligible list, and testing the lottery software," a senior MHADA official explained in HT.
Meanwhile, in Navi Mumbai, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is preparing for a housing lottery around Dussehra, offering around 40,000 homes. These units, situated in prime locations such as Vashi, Sanpada, Nerul, and Juinagar, are ready to move in. Another 27,000 homes are currently under construction.
In August, CIDCO also announced a draw for 902 affordable homes, priced between Rs 26 lakh and over Rs 2 crore, in Kalamboli, Kharghar, Ghansoli, and other areas. The lottery for these homes will be conducted on October 10.
