Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024: Will Maratha Quota Movement Reshape Marathwada Politics?
Marathwada, a region with eight districts in central Maharashtra, is at the heart of political discussions as assembly elections approach. With 46 assembly constituencies, the region has historically been significant in state politics. The ruling Mahayuti alliance faces tough questions following its poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections six months ago, winning just one of eight seats in the region, according to the Hindustan Times (HT).
Will Manoj Jarange-Patil Influence The Polls?

Manoj Jarange-Patil, a vocal advocate for the Maratha reservation, continues to challenge the Mahayuti alliance. Though he decided not to field candidates this time, he has urged the Maratha community to vote against the ruling coalition. However, unlike his active campaigning during the Lok Sabha polls, Jarange-Patil has not held meetings in Maratha-dominated areas, which his supporters believe could reduce the impact of his agitation.
The BJP acknowledges the potential impact of Jarange-Patil's stance. According to a BJP leader, the lack of a strong OBC consolidation this time may also work against the alliance.
Maratha And OBC Rift Deepens
The reservation issue has widened the divide between Marathas and OBCs. Villages have seen resolutions and social media campaigns calling for boycotts between the two communities. In response to Jarange-Patil's agitation, OBC activist Laxman Hake organised protests, leading to verbal and occasionally violent clashes in districts like Jalna.
OBC leaders have mobilised their community to vote exclusively for OBC candidates, further complicating the Mahayuti's chances.
Farmer Distress Looms Large
Agriculture continues to be a major concern in Marathwada and neighbouring Vidarbha. Farmers are grappling with low prices for cash crops like soybeans and cotton. The current market price of soybean is Rs 4,000 to Rs 4,200 per quintal, far below the government-declared MSP of Rs 4,892. Similarly, cotton prices are Rs 6,700 per quintal against an MSP of Rs 7,521.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced a new purchasing price of ₹6,000 per quintal for soybeans, while Congress has promised Rs 7,000. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray urged farmers to hold on to their produce, promising better prices under his government if elected.
Despite these promises, farm activist Vijay Jawandhiya believes caste dynamics and the personal networks of candidates will overshadow agricultural issues during the elections.
Internal Struggles
The Mahayuti faces rebellion in several constituencies, including Mukhed, where a Shiv Sena leader is contesting against the BJP's sitting MLA. Prominent leaders like BJP's Raosaheb Danve are fighting to secure wins for their family members in Jalna and Nanded. Agriculture Minister Dhananjay Munde is also facing a stiff challenge from a Maratha candidate in Parli.
Political analyst Shuja Shakir highlights the potential role of the Maratha reservation issue, predicting that a coalition of Maratha, Muslim, and Dalit voters could shift the balance in favour of the MVA opposition.
As Marathwada braces for the assembly elections, caste dynamics, farmer distress, and political realignments are set to shape the region's electoral future.
