Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024: Tanaji Sawant's Rising Influence in Marathwada

In Marathwada, it's hard to find anyone unfamiliar with the name Tanaji Sawant. Hailing from a farming family, he holds a degree in engineering. Over the years, he has founded educational institutions and sugar factories, ventured into politics, and served as a minister. His dynamic personality and approachable nature have made Tanaji Sawant a notable figure, particularly in the Solapur, Dharashiv, and Pune regions.

Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024 Tanaji Sawant s Rising Influence in Marathwada

Born in Solapur district, Tanaji Sawant earned a degree in electronic engineering. After briefly working as a lecturer and pursuing a Ph.D., he transitioned into the industrial sector. He established the Bhairavnath Sugar Factory in Sonari, Dharashiv district, and gradually expanded its operations. Today, multiple units of the Bhairavnath Sugar Factory operate across various districts, solidifying Tanaji Sawant's presence throughout Maharashtra. Furthermore, the Jaywant Educational Trust, which he founded in Pune, is educating hundreds of students, while the Terna Sugar Factory, also part of his business group, plays a significant role in the politics of Dharashiv district.

Although Tanaji Sawant was born in Solapur, he made Dharashiv his political stronghold. When no leader dared to challenge the influential NCP leader Padmasinh Patil, Tanaji Sawant took on that role himself, establishing an organization within Dharashiv district. In 2016, he entered the Legislative Council, serving as the Minister of Water Conservation in Devendra Fadnavis's cabinet.

Throughout his political career, Sawant has maintained friendly relations with various political parties. In 2019, he won the Paranda Assembly constituency on a Shiv Sena ticket, hoping that his contributions to strengthening the party would lead to a ministerial position. However, Uddhav Thackeray did not meet his expectations, forming the Mahavikas Aghadi and reserving a cabinet position for his son, which left Sawant disappointed.

In 2022, when Eknath Shinde led a revolt against Shiv Sena, Tanaji Sawant became a prominent supporter. As one of the key figures who broke away with Shinde, he subsequently saw Eknath Shinde become the Chief Minister and the leader of a faction that took over the Shiv Sena party symbol. Tanaji Sawant was appointed as Minister of Health and Family Welfare in Shinde's cabinet, where he quickly established a reputation as an aggressive and dynamic minister. Despite media scrutiny, he often silenced critics with sharp retorts.

Focus on Water Conservation

Both Solapur and Dharashiv districts face significant challenges regarding water availability, hindering their progress compared to other regions in Western Maharashtra. Recognizing the critical importance of water resources in his jurisdiction, Tanaji Sawant spearheaded the Balasaheb Thackeray Shiv Jal Kranti Scheme, which has benefited over 250 villages. This initiative has completed 700 kilometers of infrastructure work, increasing water storage capacity by four TMC and raising groundwater levels by over twelve TMC. He also ensured the allocation of ₹11,723 crore for the Krishna Marathwada Lift Irrigation Scheme, aiming to deliver 7 TMC of water to the region.

Empowering Women and Creating Jobs

In a bid to empower women and foster economic independence, Tanaji Sawant initiated the Kranti Women's Industry Group, focusing on household items, food products, and decorative goods. This initiative has provided employment opportunities for over 20,000 women, generating millions in revenue. Additionally, Sawant has personally supplied 120 digital boards in the Bhum, Paranda, and Vashi talukas and has trained more than 400 teachers on their usage.

In the Paranda taluka, Tanaji Sawant has made significant contributions to agriculture, irrigation, and cooperatives. Through his industrial group and educational institutions, many have found job opportunities. He has consistently championed development, maintaining very cordial relations with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Given the current political climate in Dharashiv district, Tanaji Sawant is well-positioned to succeed in the 2024 Assembly elections, paving the way for continued development in the region.
