Central Railway Upgrades Mumbai Locals, Special 13-Seat Compartments For Senior Citizens — Here’s What Inside

Central Railway has rolled out Mumbai's first local train equipped with a specially designed compartment exclusively for senior citizens. In a parallel move, Western Railway is also gearing up to introduce similar facilities, with planning and implementation already in progress.

The Matunga Workshop of Central Railway recently unveiled its first Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) rake featuring a dedicated senior citizen compartment on the Mumbai suburban network. Acting swiftly on directives issued by the Railway Board, Central Railway converted a middle luggage compartment in the sixth coach from the Mumbai end into an exclusive space for elderly passengers. This development represents a key step toward promoting inclusive and accessible mobility, particularly aiming to ease the difficulties that senior citizens face while boarding or alighting trains during peak travel hours.

The redesigned coach includes improved seating arrangements comprising three 3-seater benches and two 2-seater units, allowing for a total seating capacity of 13. To enhance comfort and convenience, the compartment has been outfitted with stainless steel tubular partitions equipped with sight-level panels and integrated grab poles.

In terms of safety, the coach features knurled vertical grab poles at the doorway footboards and emergency ladders installed beneath both doorframes. Aesthetic upgrades have also been implemented, with vinyl wrapping used to improve the interior ambiance and visual appeal. Central Railway officials noted that this first prototype sets the stage for further modernization, with plans in place to gradually retrofit all EMU rakes in its suburban fleet with similar senior citizen compartments.

Meanwhile, Western Railway is advancing its own initiative to support elderly commuters. A senior official confirmed that a contract has already been finalized to convert one luggage compartment in each of Western Railway's non-air-conditioned rakes into dedicated compartments for senior citizens. Conversion work is currently underway, and the first such rake is expected to enter service soon.

At present, Western Railway reserves 14 seats for senior citizens in each train, typically located in the third and twelfth coaches from the Churchgate end. However, these seats are often inaccessible during peak hours due to overcrowding, leaving many elderly passengers to travel under uncomfortable or unsafe conditions.

To remedy this, Western Railway plans to convert one luggage compartment in each of its 105 non-AC EMU rakes-comprising 90 twelve-coach and 15 fifteen-coach trains-into a designated senior citizen compartment. These compartments will provide seating for 13 passengers and standing space for up to 91, significantly boosting safety, accessibility, and comfort for elderly commuters across the suburban network.
