Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP president Ajit Pawar secured a resounding victory from his traditional Baramati constituency, defeating his nephew, Yugendra Pawar of the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP), by a massive margin of over one lakh votes in the assembly elections.

Baramati Assembly Election Result 2024

This electoral battle in Baramati was a high-stakes contest marked by intense campaigning from both factions of the Nationalist Congress Party. Just five months earlier, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) had claimed victory in Baramati during the Lok Sabha elections when Sharad Pawar's daughter, Supriya Sule, defeated Ajit Pawar's wife, Sunetra Pawar, by a margin of 1.5 lakh votes.

Baramati has been a stronghold of the Pawar family for 57 years. Sharad Pawar, the patriarch of the family, served as the constituency's MLA until 1991 before transitioning to national politics. Since then, his nephew Ajit Pawar has carried the mantle, winning seven consecutive assembly elections.

The Pawar Family Rift

The family feud came into sharp focus during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when Sharad Pawar's daughter, Supriya Sule, faced off against Ajit Pawar's wife, Sunetra. Despite Sunetra's spirited campaign, Supriya emerged victorious, securing her fourth consecutive term as MP. Reflecting on the defeat, Ajit admitted that turning family members against each other was a mistake.
