APMC’s Big Move: Fast Tag System To Combat Traffic Chaos At Vashi Market—What It Means For You
In an effort to ease traffic congestion around Vashi's Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) and enhance the market's operational efficiency, authorities have announced the introduction of entry charges for vehicles. A Fast Tag system will be implemented at all five entry points to the market, aiming to control parking and streamline movement, as reported by Hindustan Times (HT).
This decision was made to address the long-standing issue of trucks and other vehicles causing significant congestion within the market. The new system is expected to not only reduce traffic but also increase the market's revenue.

A meeting, led by APMC Secretary P. L. Khandagale, alongside market leaders, stakeholders, and Mathadi leader MLC Shashikant Shinde, was held to discuss various issues affecting the market. Among these, vehicle congestion was a key topic.
The APMC receives thousands of vehicles from across the country, delivering agricultural produce that is sold to retailers across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The market includes five distinct sectors: onion and potato, vegetable, fruit, spice, and grain markets.
Currently, vehicles carrying goods are charged a nominal fee for entry and exit, while private vehicles are exempt. However, concerns have been raised about irregularities in the payment process for goods vehicles, as well as the lack of restrictions or penalties for vehicles overstaying their welcome after unloading. This contributes to the severe congestion, as trucks remain parked even after unloading, obstructing the flow of other vehicles, such as those arriving to unload goods or traders' vehicles seeking to load produce.
Adding to the issue is the fact that vehicles belonging to stakeholders and even outsiders are often found parked within the market, further exacerbating the congestion.
Shashikant Shinde explained, "We have decided to install barricades and a Fast Tag system at all market gates, similar to toll plazas. This will allow for smoother traffic flow within the market and help generate additional revenue."
Khandagale confirmed that the Fast Tag system would be operational at all gates within the next few days. "This will prevent unnecessary vehicle parking within the market. Vehicles that remain inside after unloading will also be fined. This will not only resolve the congestion issue but also boost revenue for the market committee," he added.
The introduction of these measures is expected to significantly improve traffic management and operational efficiency within the APMC, benefiting both traders and market visitors alike.
