West Bengal's MSME Sector Poised to Boost Contribution to Defence Industry
The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in West Bengal is set to boost its contribution to the defence industry, as highlighted by a senior state official. During a Defence MSME Manufacturing Forum meeting, Rajesh Pandey, Principal Secretary of the Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles, discussed the potential of the state's 90 lakh MSMEs. He urged companies to support these units in West Bengal.
West Bengal is home to one of India's largest leather parks and is also developing a Rubber Park along with several industrial parks. These facilities offer strong infrastructure for MSMEs to flourish. Pandey encouraged investors and experts to engage with state officials to explore how government incentives and infrastructure can aid their projects.

Pandey pointed out that 99% of these MSMEs are micro units capable of significantly contributing to defence production. The Ministry of Defence's new policy encourages MSMEs, including start-ups, to become more involved in the defence sector. This policy change offers a substantial opportunity for West Bengal's MSMEs to produce various defence products and engage in research and development.
The state's emphasis on new projects and timely commissioning demonstrates its dedication to creating an environment that supports growth in the defence sector. By utilising its vast network of MSMEs, West Bengal aims to play a vital role in fulfilling the country's defence production requirements.
Pandey invited stakeholders to engage in discussions with state officials to explore project proposals and determine how they can benefit from government support. He mentioned that a high-powered committee reviews new projects every 15 days to ensure timely commissioning and monitoring.
The forum also included participation from senior representatives of notable organisations such as GRSE, Bharat Dynamics Ltd, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Aerospace Engineers Pvt Ltd, and Titagarh Rail Systems Limited. Their involvement highlights the collaborative efforts between public and private sectors in enhancing the state's defence production capabilities.
This collaborative approach underscores the importance of partnerships between public and private sectors in advancing West Bengal's defence production capabilities. The state's focus on leveraging its extensive network of MSMEs aims to meet national defence production needs effectively.
