Kolkata Police Forms SIT To Probe Law Student’s Alleged Gang-Rape Inside College
The Kolkata Police has formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student that reportedly took place inside South Calcutta Law College on June 25, 2025. The SIT will be led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Pradip Kumar Ghosal from the Special Surveillance Division (SSD), and will be responsible for conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the disturbing incident.
Three individuals - Manojit Mishra, Zaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay - have been arrested in connection with the case. All three have been remanded to police custody until July 1, 2025. In addition to these arrests, the college's security guard has also been taken into custody as part of the ongoing investigation, amid suspicions of either complicity or negligence.

According to the complaint filed by the survivor, the accused lured her with the false promise of a student union position. After she rejected a marriage proposal from the prime accused, Manojit Mishra, she was allegedly dragged to the security guard's room on the college premises, where the assault took place. The survivor has claimed that she was gang-raped, the act was video recorded, and she was threatened with the circulation of the footage if she went public or reported the crime. She also alleged physical assault and unlawful confinement.
The case has ignited significant political and public outrage across Kolkata. The BJP has demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, accusing the ruling party of shielding individuals linked to their student wing. Protests have erupted throughout the city, with demonstrators demanding swift justice and institutional accountability.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the case and has called for a time-bound and impartial investigation. The Commission emphasized the urgency of the matter and has demanded strict action against those found guilty.
The SIT has begun its probe and is focusing on collecting evidence, interrogating the accused, verifying video footage, and ensuring that the investigation proceeds without bias. The incident has not only shocked the academic and legal communities but has also raised serious concerns about the safety of women in educational institutions and the role of political influence on campus.
