Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Brunei as part of his two-nation tour. He was warmly welcomed by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, one of the world's wealthiest and most powerful monarchs, at the airport.

The Sultan, known for his immense wealth and influence, will also host Prime Minister Modi at his grand palace, Istana Nurul Iman, reputed to be the largest palace in the world.

Early Life and Ascension to the Throne

Born on July 15, 1946, in Brunei Town (now Bandar Seri Begawan), Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah is the son of Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddin and Queen Consort Pengiran Anak Damit. Initially educated privately in Brunei, he later pursued further studies at the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In 1966-1967, Bolkiah trained as an officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

In 1961, at the age of 15, Bolkiah was appointed Crown Prince by his father. Six years later, in 1967, Sultan Saifuddin abdicated the throne, and Bolkiah ascended as the Sultan of Brunei. He was officially crowned the 29th Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on August 1, 1968. Initially, his father remained a powerful figure behind the throne, but after the death of his wife in 1979, Sultan Saifuddin withdrew from public life, allowing Bolkiah to take full control.

Rise to Power and Independence of Brunei

During the 1970s, Sultan Bolkiah actively traveled across Brunei to engage with citizens, making himself a visible leader. As Brunei approached independence from Britain, Bolkiah began appointing citizens to key bureaucratic positions and took steps to reduce corruption. In 1978, he visited London to discuss Brunei's sovereignty, which resulted in the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Britain and Brunei.

Brunei, which had been a British protectorate since 1888, gained full independence on January 1, 1984. Sultan Bolkiah then appointed himself as the nation's prime minister. In 1991, he introduced the concept of the Malay Muslim Monarchy, solidifying his role as the "defender of the faith."

Absolute Power and Controversial Laws

Sultan Bolkiah is one of the few remaining monarchs with absolute power over his nation. In addition to being the Sultan, he serves as Brunei's defense minister and finance minister. Although he is widely popular in Brunei, his decision to introduce Sharia law has been met with international criticism.

In 2014, Brunei became the first country in East Asia to adopt Sharia law, which includes harsh punishments such as stoning for adultery and amputation of limbs for theft. In 2019, the country faced global backlash after introducing laws that included the death penalty for gay sex. This prompted calls for a boycott of Brunei by celebrities like George Clooney and Ellen DeGeneres. Following international pressure, Sultan Bolkiah announced that the death penalty under these laws would never be enforced.

Unparalleled Wealth

Sultan Bolkiah is renowned for his extraordinary wealth. With a personal fortune estimated at around $30 billion, he was once the world's richest person during the 1980s and 1990s, before being overtaken by Microsoft founder Bill Gates. The Sultan's opulent lifestyle includes a collection of approximately 7,000 luxury cars, including 450 Ferraris, 380 Bentleys, and 600 Rolls-Royces. One of his most famous vehicles is a gold-plated Rolls-Royce with an open top and a platform for an umbrella bearer.

The Sultan also owns a fleet of private jets, including a lavishly outfitted Boeing 747-400, which has earned the nickname "the flying palace" due to its solid gold washbasins and luxurious accessories valued at $120 million.

The Sultan's residence, Istana Nurul Iman Palace, is the largest in the world, featuring over 1,700 rooms, 257 bathrooms, and five swimming pools. Built in 1984 to commemorate Brunei's independence, the palace covers an area of 200,000 square meters and cost $1.4 billion to construct. The palace also includes 110 garages for his extensive car collection and air-conditioned stables for his horses.

Personal Life

Sultan Bolkiah is married to Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha. Together, they have five sons and seven daughters. An avid sportsman, the Sultan enjoys playing polo, squash, and badminton. He is also a certified pilot, capable of flying both airplanes and helicopters.
