Who Is Naveed Akram? Pakistan-Linked Terrorist Behind Sydney’s Bondi Beach Attack That Killed At Least 12

Australian authorities are probing the background and possible overseas links of a Pakistani-origin suspect following the deadly terror attack at Sydney's Bondi Beach.

The mass shooting during a Hanukkah event has left at least 12 people dead and several others injured, triggering a nationwide security response as investigators work to establish motive, networks and any broader threats.

Attack at Bondi Beach Triggers Nationwide Probe

One of the gunmen involved in the attack has been identified as Naveed Akram, 24. According to local media reports, Akram opened fire on a crowd of nearly 1,000 to 2,000 people gathered at the beachfront event on Sunday. More than 50 shots were reportedly fired, sending people running for cover or sheltering indoors as panic spread across the area.

Police confirmed that the operation remains under investigation, with multiple agencies involved in examining the circumstances leading up to the attack and the movements of the suspects.

Educational Background and Institute Details

Investigators have identified Akram as a student enrolled at the Al-Murad Institute of Heckenberg in New South Wales, an institution that teaches Arabic and the Quran. Authorities are examining his educational and social background as part of the broader inquiry.

The Al-Murad Institute is registered as a business entity in New South Wales, with official records listing Adam Ismail as the registered business owner. Officials have clarified that, at this stage, there is no link between the institute or its management and the terror attack.

Online Footprint and Security Agency Actions

According to Akram's Facebook page, viewed by the Jerusalem Post, he studied at Central Queensland University in Sydney and at Hamdard University in Islamabad. He also studied at the Al-Murad Institute, where he was described as a model student.

As part of the ongoing investigation, security agencies have carried out raids at Akram's residence in Bonnyrigg, a suburb in south-west Sydney. These searches are aimed at identifying any signs of online radicalisation, including the consumption or circulation of extremist material and Gaza-linked narratives.

There has been no official confirmation on these aspects from the New South Wales Police. Australian Security Intelligence Organisation chief Mike Burgess said he was examining the identities of the attackers and assessing whether there was anyone else in the community "with similar intent".

IED Discovery and Government Response

Police have also confirmed the discovery of an improvised explosive device in a car linked to one of the suspects involved in the shooting, escalating concerns about the scale and planning behind the attack.

Addressing the nation, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident in the strongest terms, describing it as "an act of evil, antisemitism and terrorism." Authorities have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent further threats and to bring those responsible to justice.
