Watch Video: Sunita Williams Sends Diwali Wishes From Space - Here's What She Said
Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams is marking Diwali 2024 in a truly extraordinary way-by celebrating from the International Space Station (ISS).
Originally set to return to Earth on her Boeing Starliner mission, her flight has been postponed until next year due to technical issues, giving her a unique opportunity to observe the festival of lights from 260 miles above the planet.

In a heartfelt video message released on October 29, Williams highlighted the importance of Diwali as a "festival of joy" that represents the victory of goodness in the world. She shared, "I want to extend my warmest wishes for a Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating today at the White House and around the world."
Acknowledging Community Contributions
Expressing her gratitude, Williams thanked President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for recognizing the contributions of her community and for joining in the Diwali celebrations. "Thank you to the Vice President for celebrating Diwali with our community today," she said, underscoring the spirit of unity and recognition during this festive time.
Reflections on Heritage
In her message, Williams reflected on her upbringing and the role her father played in connecting their family to Indian traditions. "I am so thankful to grow up in a multi-cultural household where our parents always encouraged us to seek opportunities and reach for the stars," she remarked, sharing the values instilled in her from a young age.
Sunita Williams, born to Deepak Pandya, an Indian, and Ursuline Bonnie Pandya, of Slovenian-American descent, is no stranger to space exploration. This mission marks her third journey to the ISS. Alongside fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, she launched on June 5, 2024, to test the capabilities of the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. However, ongoing technical challenges have delayed their return.
Achievements in Space
With a remarkable total of 322 days spent in space during her previous missions, Williams holds the record for the second-most cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut, with 50 hours and 40 minutes logged in total.
As she celebrates Diwali among the stars, Sunita Williams continues to inspire people around the globe, embodying the festival's spirit of light and hope from her extraordinary vantage point in space.
