Venezuelan Opposition Politician Fernando Martínez Meets Prosecutors After Leaving Argentine Diplomatic Compound

Venezuela's attorney general announced that an opposition figure, Fernando Martínez, met with prosecutors after leaving the Argentine diplomatic residence in Caracas. Martínez had sought refuge there for nine months to avoid arrest. Attorney General Tarek William Saab stated that Martínez "voluntarily presented himself" to authorities and provided a statement after departing the diplomatic premises on Thursday.

Martínez Meets Prosecutors After Diplomatic Shelter

Martínez was among six opposition members whom Argentine President Javier Milei's government allowed into the ambassador's residence in March. This occurred when pro-government authorities issued arrest warrants, accusing them of inciting violence to destabilise Venezuela. Two individuals familiar with the situation confirmed to The Associated Press that Martínez returned home on Thursday night after leaving the ambassador's residence. They requested anonymity due to fear of retaliation.

Opposition Members' Situation

The conditions under which Martínez left the compound remain unclear. Meanwhile, others still residing at the Argentine ambassador's home include Maria Corina Machado's campaign manager and communications director. Since late November, this group has reported a constant presence of intelligence agents and police outside the residence. They have also accused President Nicolás Maduro's government of cutting off electricity and water services.

The Venezuelan government has denied these allegations. Martínez was previously involved in a parallel government formed by the opposition after Maduro's controversial reelection in 2018. This election was widely regarded as fraudulent. In the 1990s, Martínez served as a minister of communications and transportation and participated in negotiations between the opposition and the government.

Martínez's decision to cooperate with prosecutors marks a significant development in this ongoing political saga. His actions could influence the situation of other opposition members still seeking refuge at the Argentine ambassador's residence. The broader implications for Venezuela's political landscape remain uncertain as tensions continue between opposition forces and Maduro's administration.
