US Advocates for Democratic Interim Government Formation in Bangladesh
The United States is keeping a close watch on the developments in Bangladesh, urging that the formation of an interim government be democratic and inclusive. This follows Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from the country, as stated by a White House National Security Council spokesperson.

Bangladesh plunged into turmoil on Tuesday when Prime Minister Hasina fled the country on a military aircraft. The army intervened to fill the power vacuum after days of anti-government protests resulted in over 300 deaths. "We are monitoring the situation in Bangladesh closely," said a White House National Security Council spokesperson.
US Calls for Democratic Transition
The United States has consistently advocated for respecting democratic rights in Bangladesh. "We urge that the interim government formation be democratic and inclusive," reiterated the spokesperson. Amidst volatile crowds in Dhaka, Bangladesh Army chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman announced that the 76-year-old prime minister had resigned.
In a televised address, General Waqar-uz-Zaman stated, "An interim government will be taking over. I'm taking all responsibility of the country. Please cooperate." The NSC spokesperson commended the army for their restraint during this period.
Appeal for Peace and Accountability
"We encourage all parties to refrain from further violence and restore peace as quickly as possible," said the spokesperson. The US expressed deep concern and sadness over reports of casualties and injuries from recent weeks. "We share our deepest condolences with those who lost loved ones and those who are suffering."
The spokesperson emphasised the importance of a thorough investigation into all attacks. "It will be vital for the new government to carefully and credibly investigate all attacks, and provide accountability and justice for the victims," they added.
The situation remains tense as Bangladesh navigates this critical transition period. The international community continues to watch closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution and a return to stability.
