Pentagon Works to Maintain US Troop Presence in Niger for Counterterrorism Operations
The Pentagon is actively seeking a solution to keep US troops in Niger, a vital location for counterterrorism operations in sub-Saharan Africa, despite a directive to depart. Recent high-level discussions between US and Nigerien officials, including concerns about Nigers potential relationships with Russia and Iran, have influenced this decision. The US delegations lengthy and direct talks with junta officials aimed to address these issues.
The Pentagon is actively collaborating with Nigerien authorities to explore options for the continued presence of US troops in the country, following a directive issued over the weekend mandating their departure. Niger serves as a pivotal base for counterterrorism operations across sub-Saharan Africa.

High-Level Delegation Engages with Nigerien Military Junta
Last week, a high-ranking delegation of US officials, including Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander, and the head of US Africa Command Gen. Michael Langley, undertook a visit to Niger. The delegation engaged in substantial and direct discussions with members of the military junta, addressing concerns over Niger's potential ties with Russia and Iran.
Concerns Raised Over Niger's Trajectory
Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh expressed the United States' apprehension regarding Niger's current trajectory. The discussions with junta officials were prompted in part by these concerns.
Junta's Spokesperson Declares US Flights Illegal
Following the meeting, the junta's spokesperson, Col Maj Amadou Abdramane, asserted that recent US flights over Nigerien territory were conducted illegally. Additionally, Insa Garba Saidou, a local activist assisting the military rulers with communications, criticized US attempts to compel the junta to choose between strategic partners.
US Seeks Clarification Through Diplomatic Channels
Singh acknowledged the US government's awareness of the March 16 statement announcing the termination of the status of forces agreement between Niger and the United States. She emphasized that diplomatic channels are being utilized to seek clarification, as discussions are ongoing.
Junta's Control and US Troop Presence
Since July, Niger has largely been under the control of a military junta, following the ousting of the democratically elected president by mutinous soldiers. Subsequently, the junta requested the departure of French forces from the country.
As of December, the US military maintained a presence of approximately 650 troops in Niger, primarily consolidated at a base situated farther from the capital city of Niamey. Singh disclosed that the total number of personnel currently in the country, including civilians and contractors, stands at roughly 1,000.
Significance of Niger Base for US Operations
The US base in Niger plays a crucial role in counterterrorism operations within the Sahel region. It serves as a hub for both manned and unmanned surveillance operations, although Singh clarified that the only drone flights currently being conducted are for force protection purposes.
In the Sahel, the US has provided support to local ground troops, including accompanying them on missions. However, the frequency of such accompanied missions has been reduced since the deaths of US troops during a joint operation in Niger in 2017.
