US to Begin Pilot Program for Domestic Renewal of H-1B Visas in December

The United States will begin a pilot program for domestic renewal of certain categories of H-1B visas in December, benefiting a large number of Indian technology professionals.

The United States is set to launch a pilot program in December for the domestic renewal of certain categories of H-1B visas, benefiting a large number of Indian technology professionals. The announcement comes months after the White House unveiled the plan during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit in June.

US Announces Domestic Renewal Program for H-1B Visas

Addressing Visa Wait Times

In an interview, Julie Stufft, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Visa Services, acknowledged the high demand for US visas in India and the lengthy wait times. She emphasized the need to ensure that Indian travelers can get appointments as quickly as possible. The domestic visa renewal program, with a focus on India, is one way to achieve this goal.

20,000 Visas to be Issued

Over a three-month period starting in December, the State Department will issue 20,000 visas to foreign nationals already present in the country. The vast majority of these visas will be granted to Indian nationals living in the US. This initiative aims to prevent individuals from having to travel back to India or other countries for visa renewal, allowing US missions in India to concentrate on new applicants.

Federal Register Notice

Stufft announced that a federal register notice will be released soon, outlining the steps and eligibility criteria for the first tranche of applicants. The notice will provide detailed instructions and specify the categories of workers eligible to apply. The program is exclusively for work visas and is intended for individuals residing long-term in the US who wish to renew their visas without traveling overseas.

A Huge Undertaking

Describing the initiative as a massive undertaking, Stufft expressed excitement about its potential. The pilot program will begin with 20,000 cases in December, January, and February, with plans to expand to more categories of workers in the US throughout 2024.

Significance for Indian-Americans

Indian-American community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria hailed the State Department's move as significant. As a commissioner to the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, Bhutoria had proposed such a program, which was accepted and recommended by President Joe Biden. He expressed gratitude to President Biden, the State Department, and the AANHPI Commission for implementing the recommendation.

Broader Immigration Advocacy

Bhutoria, who serves on immigration subcommittees, reiterated his unwavering commitment to addressing immigration issues. He called for policy changes such as removing the seven-year country cap, reducing the green card backlog, and providing EAD for approved I-140 cases with a five-year backlog and aging-out children. Bhutoria believes that progress in alleviating burdens for legal immigrants reflects a society moving towards inclusivity.

The pilot program for domestic renewal of H-1B visas is a positive step towards addressing visa wait times and supporting Indian technology professionals in the US. The initiative reflects the US government's commitment to facilitating visa processes and promoting a more inclusive society. As the program unfolds, it will be essential to monitor its effectiveness and consider expanding it to benefit a broader range of applicants in the future.
