US Government Agrees to $138.7 Million Settlement Over FBI's Nassar Case Mishandling
The US Justice Department has reached a significant settlement of USD 138.7 million with over 100 individuals who accused the FBI of failing to properly handle sexual assault allegations against Larry Nassar during 2015 and 2016. This period of oversight allowed Nassar, a sports doctor associated with Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, to continue his predatory actions until his arrest. This latest settlement brings the total compensation to USD 1 billion, aimed at supporting the hundreds of women who reported being assaulted by Nassar under the pretense of medical treatment for sports-related injuries.

Acting Associate Attorney General Benjamin Mizer expressed that while the settlements cannot reverse the damage inflicted by Nassar, they are hoped to offer the victims essential support for their healing process. Nassar, who is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence, was found guilty of assaulting numerous female athletes, including Olympic gymnasts who have achieved medal status.
The acknowledgment of the FBI's failure to act upon the allegations against Nassar came after an internal investigation revealed that agents in both Indianapolis and Los Angeles were aware of the accusations but failed to take immediate action. FBI Director Christopher Wray, addressing survivors at a Senate hearing in 2021, offered an apology for the bureau's shortcomings and specifically for its missed opportunity to halt Nassar's actions in 2015.
Following an investigation in 2016, authorities discovered child sex abuse images linked to Nassar and proceeded with federal charges. The Michigan attorney general's office also pursued assault charges, leading to a high-profile sentencing hearing that highlighted the extent of Nassar's crimes through compelling victim testimonies.
Rachael Denhollander, the first individual to publicly accuse Nassar and not part of the recent settlement, expressed her gratitude towards the Justice Department for holding itself accountable. She highlighted the rarity of such outcomes for most survivors, who often do not see justice or receive restitution.
Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, along with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, have previously made substantial settlements totaling USD 880 million to address claims from over 300 women and girls who suffered at Nassar's hands. Attorney Mick Grewal, representing 44 claimants against the government, remarked on the overall USD 1 billion settlements as indicative of the grave injustices experienced by the victims.
