US Expels Illegal Indian Immigrants: Strengthening Ties And Tackling Human Smuggling
The United States deported a significant number of illegal Indian immigrants back to India on October 22, reinforcing its commitment to immigration enforcement and collaboration with India on migration issues.
This action, conducted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), aims to combat human smuggling and promote legal pathways for migration.

Details of the Deportation
The deportation involved a chartered flight that transported Indian nationals who lacked a legal basis to stay in the United States. According to the DHS, this operation highlights the ongoing cooperation between the US and Indian governments to deter irregular migration. While the DHS did not specify the exact number of individuals deported or their regions of origin in India, it emphasized that those without legal status would face swift removal.
Kristie A. Canegallo, the acting deputy secretary of Homeland Security, stated, "Indian nationals without a legal basis to remain in the United States are subject to swift removal. Intending migrants should not fall for the lies of smugglers who proclaim otherwise." She assured that the DHS would continue to enforce immigration laws rigorously.
Context of the Deportation
Sources from the Indian government noted that this deportation was part of broader cooperation on migration and mobility between the two nations. The ongoing discussions are focused on creating more avenues for legal migration from India to the United States. This deportation reflects a consistent pattern, as similar operations have been conducted over the past few years.
Since June 2024, the DHS has reported the removal or return of over 160,000 individuals globally, utilizing more than 495 international repatriation flights to over 145 countries, including India. In a statement, the DHS reiterated its commitment to reducing irregular migration, promoting safe and lawful migration pathways, and addressing the challenges posed by transnational criminal organizations involved in smuggling.
Statistics on Illegal Migration
Data provided by the Indian government indicated that in 2023, US authorities encountered 96,917 illegal Indian immigrants. The annual India-US Consular Dialogue serves as a platform for both countries to discuss mutual consular interests, including the facilitation of safe and legal migration.
As the US continues to work with foreign governments to manage repatriations, this recent deportation underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing migration issues while ensuring that vulnerable individuals are not exploited by criminal networks.
