UNRWA Staffers Accused of Hamas Collaboration in Israel
Israel accuses UNRWA employees of aiding Hamas in an October assault, prompting funding cuts and firings. The UN condemns the allegations and is investigating.
Tel Aviv, Jan 30 (AP) - An Israeli document obtained on Monday outlined serious allegations against a dozen United Nations (UN) employees who are accused of participating in the Hamas assault on October 7. The document asserts that seven of these individuals crossed into Israeli territory during the assault, with one allegedly involved in a kidnapping and another assisting in the theft of a soldier's body.

Accusations Prompt Funding Freeze
These allegations have prompted the United States and several other countries to freeze vital funding for the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, known as UNRWA. This funding is crucial for the agency's operations and serves as a lifeline for vulnerable Palestinians residing in Gaza.
UN Condemns Alleged Acts, Takes Action
In response to the accusations, the UN strongly condemned the alleged abhorrent acts and subsequently dismissed nine of the accused workers, including teachers and a social worker. Tragically, two of the accused individuals have reportedly passed away, while the identity of the last one remains undetermined.
Tensions Between Israel and UNRWA
The accusations against UNRWA employees come amidst long-standing tensions between Israel and the agency regarding its operations in Gaza. UNRWA employs approximately 13,000 individuals in Gaza, making it the largest aid provider in the region.
Gaza's Humanitarian Crisis
Gaza has been severely affected by Israel's war against Hamas, resulting in the displacement of a significant portion of the population within the besieged territory. This has led to a dire humanitarian crisis, with UN officials estimating that a quarter of the population is facing starvation.
Funding Uncertainty Threatens UNRWA Operations
With the majority of its budget now in doubt and due to the agency's practice of spending contributions as they are received throughout the year, UNRWA warns that it will be compelled to suspend operations within weeks unless funding is restored.
