Keir Starmer's Invitation to EU Meeting Signals New Era in Post-Brexit Relations
Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, is set to attend a European Union leaders' meeting in early 2024. This marks the first time a UK prime minister will participate since the UK's exit from the EU in 2020. The invitation for the informal gathering on 3 February in Brussels came from European Council President António Costa during a meeting at 10 Downing Street.

Starmer expressed his eagerness to engage in discussions about strengthening strategic cooperation with the EU, particularly focusing on defence matters. Additionally, both parties have agreed to hold regular summits involving leaders, starting in early 2025. These meetings aim to foster ongoing dialogue and collaboration between the UK and the EU.
UK-EU Relations and Strategic Cooperation
During their recent meeting, Starmer and Costa addressed support for Ukraine amidst its prolonged conflict with Russia and discussed developments in Syria. A joint statement highlighted their agreement on ensuring a peaceful transition towards political stability following the fall of President Bashar Assad's regime. This reflects their commitment to addressing international issues collaboratively.
Starmer's Labour Party, which came into power in July, seeks to improve UK-EU relations after years of tension. He aims to enhance security cooperation and mend trade ties affected by Brexit. Despite advocating for remaining in the EU during the 2016 referendum, Starmer has ruled out reversing Brexit or rejoining the EU's single market and customs union.
Brexit Stance and Youth Mobility Deal
Starmer remains firm on not re-entering the EU's borderless market, as it would require adherence to many EU rules. He also resists pressure to establish a youth mobility deal that would allow young people from Britain and the EU to live and work in each other's territories temporarily. A spokesperson confirmed there are no plans for such an agreement.
The upcoming meeting with EU leaders signifies a step towards resetting relations with the bloc. By focusing on strategic cooperation and addressing global challenges together, Starmer aims to build a more collaborative future with European partners while respecting the UK's decision to leave the EU.
