UAE's Longest Day Since 1796 Arrives On June 20 - Discover Why!
The United Arab Emirates is poised to undergo its longest day since 1796, with daylight hours spanning 13 hours and 48 minutes, owing to an earlier summer solstice this year, on June 20.
This notable event, occurring at 12:51 am Gulf Standard Time (GST) on June 20, represents the earliest solstice observed since 1796 across most countries globally, as reported by Gulf News.

UAE's Longest Day Arrives On June 20
According to information provided by WAM, similar fluctuations in solstice timing can be anticipated in forthcoming leap years. A solstice, defined as the instance when the sun reaches its utmost northerly or southerly position relative to the celestial equator on the celestial sphere, holds significant astronomical importance.
Twice annually, the summer solstice signifies the day with the lengthiest period of daylight and the shortest night in one hemisphere (Northern or Southern). During this phenomenon, the sun attains its highest elevation in the sky, resulting in continuous daylight at the pole within the respective hemisphere. Conversely, the winter solstice denotes the shortest day and longest night of the year, as reported by Gulf News.
As elucidated by Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society and esteemed member of the Arab Union for Space and Astronomy Sciences, during the summer solstice, the sun aligns directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer, its northernmost point.
Consequently, regions situated directly beneath the sun, such as the southern territories of the UAE, experience no shadow at noon. Additionally, shadows cast at midday across the Arabian Peninsula are notably shorter, with the shortest shadow observable in the entire Northern Hemisphere, as per media reports.
In terms of temperature projections, Al Jarwan anticipates daytime temperatures to range between 41 and 43 degrees Celsius, with nighttime temperatures hovering between 26 and 29 degrees Celsius. These conditions are expected to persist during the initial half of summer, spanning from June 21 to August 10.
Transitioning to the latter half of summer, spanning from August 11 to the autumnal equinox on September 23, a shift is anticipated, characterized by heightened humidity levels, sustained high temperatures, and the activation of moist Kos winds. These atmospheric dynamics catalyze the formation of cumulonimbus clouds over mountainous terrain and adjacent regions, often culminating in thunderstorms.
