Trump Vs. Musk: Tensions Loom After Election Win, Says CNN Journalist
CNN journalist Kara Swisher has predicted rising tensions between former U.S. President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk, particularly following Trump's potential victory in the upcoming U.S. elections.
In an appearance on The Chris Wallace Show, Swisher drew an intriguing comparison between the dynamic of Trump and Musk to the rivalry in the cult classic film Highlander (1986), in which two immortals engage in a battle for supremacy, with the famous tagline "There can be only one."

Swisher believes that this will be the nature of the relationship between the two powerful figures-Musk, ever the attention-seeker, will likely clash with Trump, who has been known to dominate the limelight in his own right. Swisher's prediction suggests that Trump, who is notoriously sensitive to competing influences within his inner circle, will become increasingly irritated by Musk's need for constant attention and recognition.
Swisher highlighted that Musk's desire to be in the public eye is far more intense than that of Steve Bannon, the former White House strategist who previously sought to exert influence over Trump. Swisher's comparison draws from her observations of Musk's behavior, which she sees as more disruptive and far-reaching than Bannon's role in Trump's political orbit.
The tension Swisher predicts between Trump and Musk is not unfounded. Chris Wallace, the host of The Chris Wallace Show, further emphasized this rivalry by referencing an iconic Time magazine cover from Trump's 2016 election victory, which featured Steve Bannon.
Wallace recalled the power struggle between Trump and Bannon, with Bannon's prominence in the media following the 2016 election, and noted that this kind of dynamic-of influential figures vying for Trump's attention-could easily be replicated with Musk. Wallace expressed that Trump, who values loyalty and control, would likely not appreciate Musk's growing need for the spotlight.
This potential clash is heightened by Musk's growing involvement in high-profile international matters. Recently, Musk's participation in a diplomatic call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised eyebrows, with Swisher describing it as "insane."
Musk's recent actions, including using his platform, X (formerly Twitter), to make bold statements, are seen as evidence of his increasing political clout, an area traditionally reserved for government officials and seasoned diplomats. Swisher has pointed out that Musk's foray into diplomacy and his attempts to influence public discourse signify a shift in the role of business moguls in the political sphere.
Adding to the complexity of this situation is Swisher's speculation that Musk's platform, X, and Trump's own social media platform, Truth Social, could eventually merge. Both Trump and Musk have built their platforms as vehicles for their personal brands and political ambitions, but sharing the spotlight has never been a strength for either. Musk's inclination for attention and his control over X could eventually come into conflict with Trump's ownership of Truth Social, which has become a primary outlet for Trump's communication with his supporters.
This potential merger of X and Truth Social would be a major development in the tech world, signaling an even greater convergence of media power in the hands of two influential figures. However, considering both men's egos and desire for control, it's unclear how such a partnership would unfold. Swisher's prediction reflects the reality that both Trump and Musk have historically struggled to share influence or acknowledge competing interests, leading to inevitable tensions.
In sum, Swisher's analysis suggests that as Trump's electoral victory looms and Musk continues to assert himself on the global stage, the dynamic between these two powerful figures is bound to escalate. With their respective roles in business, technology, and politics, Trump and Musk will likely continue to compete for dominance, drawing both public attention and scrutiny. Their rivalry is one to watch, as it may shape the future of both American politics and the influence of Silicon Valley in global affairs.
