Trump Labels Ukraine as 'Dead' While Criticising Its Defence Against Russia's Invasion
Donald Trump has recently expressed a grim view of Ukraine, describing it as "demolished" and its people as "dead." This raises questions about his potential approach to negotiations over Ukraine's future if he were re-elected. Trump suggested that Ukraine should have made concessions to Russia before the February 2022 invasion, claiming even a poor deal would have been better than the current situation.

Trump's Criticism of US Aid to Ukraine
Trump has consistently criticised US support for Ukraine, asserting that Russia would not have invaded if he were president. He claims he could end the war if he returned to office. However, he rarely delves into the conflict's details. His recent comments came during an economic speech in North Carolina, following a debate where he avoided stating whether he wanted Ukraine to win.
During a recent event, Trump praised Russia's military capabilities, noting that wars are "what they do." He began criticising Ukraine by referencing President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's remarks about him and running mate JD Vance. Zelenskyy had labelled Vance "too radical" for suggesting Ukraine surrender territories and questioned Trump's ability to stop the war.
Trump depicted Ukraine as devastated outside Kyiv, with dwindling soldiers and population losses due to war and emigration. He questioned whether Ukraine has any leverage left for negotiating peace. "Any deal — the worst deal — would’ve been better than what we have now," Trump stated. He argued that even a bad deal would have preserved lives and infrastructure.
Ukraine's Current Military Challenges
Zelenskyy is currently seeking US support for a victory plan involving long-range Western weapons against Russian targets. Despite exceeding expectations by resisting Russian advances, Ukrainian forces face tough battles in the east against one of the world's strongest armies. A deal with Russia would likely be unfavourable for Ukraine, which has lost significant territory and lives.
Trump blamed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the conflict, accusing them of encouraging it by supporting Ukraine instead of urging territorial concessions to Russia. "Biden and Kamala allowed this to happen by feeding Zelenskyy money and munitions like no country has ever seen before," Trump remarked.
Notably, Trump did not criticise Putin's motives for invading but suggested Putin wouldn't have initiated the war if Trump were in power. However, he did acknowledge Putin's flaws by stating, "He's no angel." These comments highlight Trump's complex stance on the conflict and his views on international diplomacy.
