Trump Slams Flag Half-Mast Decision Ahead Of Inauguration: Democrats To Blame?
Ahead of his inauguration on January 20, 2025, President-elect Donald Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision to fly US flags at half-mast. The move follows the death of former US President Jimmy Carter, which prompted President Joe Biden to issue a directive lowering flags on federal buildings for 30 days, as reported by Hindustan Times.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump lamented that no American could be happy about the optics of flags at half-mast during his inauguration. "Nobody wants to see this," Trump wrote, further accusing the Democrats of being pleased with the situation. He claimed the party, under President Biden, was "giddy" about the downbeat optics of the flag being flown at half-mast during his ceremony. He also criticized the Democrats for their handling of the country, calling it "a total mess."

The Reason Behind the Flag Decision
The White House, however, clarified that the decision to lower the flags was a symbolic gesture to honor the late Jimmy Carter. Biden ordered the flags to be flown at half-mast for 30 days, a customary practice following the passing of a former president, as reported by Hindustan Times. Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, was the longest-lived US president in history, and a state funeral will be held in his honor on January 9, 2025. President Biden also called on Americans to visit places of worship to pay tribute to Carter.
Trump's Remarks on the Matter
Trump, who had been a frequent critic of Carter's policies, chose to attend the six-day funeral service. Despite their philosophical and political differences, Trump acknowledged Carter's dedication to the country. "While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically, I also realized that he truly loved and respected our country, and all it stands for," Trump wrote. "He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect."
Press Secretary Responds to Speculation
In response to growing speculation about the flag situation, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that the decision to keep the flags at half-mast would not be reversed. Trump himself suggested that there might be changes to the flag status before his inauguration, but it remains to be seen whether any action will be taken, as per media reports.
The flags are expected to remain at half-mast until January 29, 2025, as a mark of respect for the late president. However, the debate over the optics of this move during Trump's inauguration continues to fuel political discourse in the lead-up to the ceremony.
