Trump Hints at Nearing India-US Trade Deal Amid Global Tariff Shake-Up
US President Donald Trump recently indicated that the United States is nearing a trade agreement with India. This announcement follows extensive discussions between negotiators from both nations in Washington. Despite imposing new tariffs on 14 countries, Trump expressed optimism about finalising a deal with India soon.
During a meeting at the White House, Trump stated, "We made a deal with the United Kingdom, we made a deal with China, we're close to making a deal with India." He also mentioned that letters outlining new tariffs were sent to other countries. "Others we met with, and we don't think we're going to be able to make a deal, so we just send them a letter," he added.

Trade Tariffs and Negotiations
The US President announced fresh trade measures affecting several countries, including Bangladesh, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan. These measures are set to take effect from August 1. Trump explained that letters were dispatched to various nations detailing the tariffs they must pay. Adjustments might be considered if justified causes are presented.
The countries affected by Trump's tariff announcements include Bangladesh, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Serbia, Tunisia, South Africa, South Korea and Thailand. Among these nations, Myanmar and Laos face the steepest tariffs at 40%.
India's Position on Trade Talks
Union Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated that India is prepared to engage in trade agreements with the US if it aligns with national interests. However, he emphasised that such deals would not be rushed due to external deadlines. India's stance remains firm on protecting its agricultural sector from foreign competition.
India has been cautious about fully opening its agricultural market. Concerns persist over genetically modified crops and dairy products from America. A source familiar with the talks noted that millions of Indian farmers' livelihoods could be jeopardised by competition from large-scale American dairy farms.
Adjustments in Tariff Deadlines
Initially set for July 9 by Trump in April this year, the deadline for imposing tariffs has been postponed to August 1 through an executive order. When asked about this extension's firmness, Trump remarked: "I would say firm but not 100% firm." He indicated openness to alternative approaches if proposed by other parties.
India had initially requested the removal of all retaliatory tariffs before this deadline. Currently imposed is a baseline tariff of 10%, along with an additional 16% country-specific tariff. These demands reflect India's efforts to safeguard its domestic industries while negotiating favourable terms.
The ongoing negotiations between India and the US aim at reaching mutually beneficial outcomes without compromising essential sectors like agriculture. As discussions continue towards finalising an agreement before August begins under revised timelines set by both sides involved in these critical trade talks.
