Trump's Ambition as a Global Peacemaker Faces Challenges Amid Gaza Ceasefire Talks
The United States has abruptly halted negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire in Gaza, adding uncertainty to President Donald Trump's attempts to resolve global conflicts. This setback in the Israel-Hamas conflict is one of several challenges Trump faces as his efforts to mediate international disputes have encountered obstacles. Despite being in office for only six months, Trump has aimed to establish himself as a peacemaker.

Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, announced that the US is withdrawing its negotiating team from Qatar due to Hamas not demonstrating "good faith" in reaching a ceasefire. Although discussions have been ongoing for weeks, no significant progress has been made. Witkoff mentioned the US would explore other options to secure the release of hostages, but specifics were not provided.
Gaza Ceasefire Talks
Despite recent talks and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the White House, no major breakthroughs have occurred. When asked about future actions, Trump stated that Hamas was unwilling to negotiate and suggested they might be pursued aggressively. The lack of progress highlights the complexities involved in achieving peace in the region.
In another conflict, Trump had previously claimed he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine war swiftly. However, this has not materialised, and both nations remain far from an agreement. Trump has become more critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin but has hesitated to support a bipartisan bill imposing severe sanctions on Russia.
Russia-Ukraine Conflict
Instead of immediate sanctions, Trump gave Russia 50 days to accept a peace deal or face penalties on energy exports. This delay allowed Russia to intensify its offensive in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed willingness for direct talks with Putin, but Russia rejected this offer due to significant differences between the two countries.
Meanwhile, Iran's nuclear programme remains a contentious issue. Although a fragile ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Iran after joint strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, no agreement has been reached regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions. An Iranian diplomat indicated readiness for talks with the US if trust-building measures are taken by Washington.
Iran Nuclear Programme
Iran is also engaging with Britain, France, and Germany on a separate negotiation track related to the 2015 nuclear deal from which Trump withdrew the US during his first term. Foreign ministers from these countries met in Istanbul to discuss potential sanctions if no progress is made by August on limiting Iran's nuclear programme.
Despite challenges in some areas, Trump has achieved success in brokering agreements elsewhere. In June, he facilitated an agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo aimed at ending decades of conflict. The deal emphasises sovereignty and territorial integrity while granting US access to critical minerals.
Other Diplomatic Efforts
In May, Trump's administration intervened when tensions between India and Pakistan escalated following military strikes. While it's unclear what long-term progress has been made regarding Kashmir, Trump recently met with Pakistan's army chief at the White House. Additionally, a limited ceasefire was announced between Israel and Syria after intervention by Trump's special envoy Tom Barrack.
Barrack stated that both sides committed to de-escalation efforts during discussions in Paris. However, Israel's intervention surprised Trump and complicated efforts for full diplomatic normalisation between Syria and Israel. These developments illustrate the ongoing complexities and challenges in achieving lasting peace in various global conflicts.
