Trump Gets Second Nobel Peace Prize Nod, Courtesy Israeli PM Netanyahu
During a private dinner at the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nominated US President Donald Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. This nomination highlights Trump's role in West Asian diplomacy, particularly through the Abraham Accords. Netanyahu personally handed Trump a copy of the nomination letter, acknowledging his contributions to regional peace.
The Abraham Accords, signed in 2020 during Trump's first term, were pivotal in establishing formal ties between Israel and several Arab nations, including the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. These agreements marked a significant diplomatic shift in West Asia but did not address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict directly. Netanyahu's letter praises Trump for brokering these accords and creating "significant opportunities for peace" in the region.

Trump's Diplomatic Engagement
At the dinner, Trump expressed gratitude to Netanyahu for the nomination. He stated that receiving such recognition from Israel's Prime Minister was highly meaningful. Trump reiterated that he considers the Abraham Accords one of his administration's key achievements.
Netanyahu's visit to Washington coincided with crucial ceasefire discussions related to Gaza. Before leaving Tel Aviv, he informed reporters about reaching a critical point in negotiations aimed at securing an agreement that would return hostages while safeguarding Israel's security interests.
Gaza Ceasefire Talks
The Israeli military reported that 49 hostages remain in Gaza from an original count of 251 taken during Hamas's attacks in October 2023. Of these hostages, 27 are believed to have died. Netanyahu has consistently rejected Hamas ceasefire demands, including recent proposals mediated by Qatar and Egypt, which he deemed "unacceptable," according to Al Jazeera.
In addition to Israel's endorsement, Pakistan also nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize last month. The nomination credited him with "easing tensions with India" during his presidency. However, India has consistently denied any involvement by Trump in its affairs with Pakistan and opposes third-party mediation on such issues.
Pakistan's Nomination
The Pakistani nomination was submitted by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar despite calls from several politicians urging reconsideration after US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Nonetheless, the letter had already been sent to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee.
This series of nominations underscores Trump's perceived influence on international diplomacy during his tenure as US President. While opinions vary on his impact, these endorsements highlight his role in shaping global relations.
