Trump Condemns Brazilian Authorities for Alleged Witch Hunt Against Bolsonaro
US President Donald Trump criticised Brazilian authorities on Monday, labelling the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro as "a witch hunt." Bolsonaro, who led Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is facing trial at the Supreme Court for his alleged involvement in a coup attempt in January 2023. Trump expressed his intention to "closely monitor" the proceedings.

Bolsonaro has been declared ineligible to run for office until 2030 due to abuse of power during the 2022 election, where he narrowly lost to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro has consistently denied the allegations, claiming he is a victim of political persecution. He thanked Trump on social media for being "a role model for faith and resilience."
Trump's Support and Criticism
In his first remarks since the trial began, Trump stated on social media that Brazil is treating Bolsonaro unfairly. He argued that Bolsonaro is "not guilty of anything, except for having fought for the people," drawing parallels between Bolsonaro's situation and his own experiences. "This happened to me, times 10," Trump remarked.
Trump further stated, "I will be closely monitoring the witch hunt of Jair Bolsonaro, his family, and thousands of his supporters. Leave Bolsonaro alone!" His comments highlight his ongoing support for Bolsonaro amidst the legal challenges faced by the former Brazilian leader.
Lula's Response and Sovereignty
President Lula responded without mentioning Trump directly, emphasising that defending democracy in Brazil is a matter for Brazilians alone. He stated, "We are a sovereign nation," and added that Brazil has "solid and independent institutions." Lula stressed that no one is above the law, especially those who threaten freedom and the rule of law.
Speaking at a BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Lula dismissed Trump's comments on Bolsonaro, saying he had "more important things to comment on." He advised Trump to "take care of your own life, not ours," underscoring Brazil's focus on its internal affairs.
Legal Proceedings and International Attention
The Brazilian Supreme Court has not commented on Trump's statements regarding Bolsonaro's trial. The case continues to draw international attention due to its implications for Brazilian politics and democracy. The trial's outcome could significantly impact Bolsonaro's political future and influence in Brazil.
The ongoing legal proceedings against Bolsonaro highlight the tensions within Brazilian politics. As the trial progresses, both domestic and international observers remain focused on how these events will unfold and their potential consequences for Brazil's political landscape.
