Trudeau Rejects Trump’s Annexation Threat; Poilievre Vows To Strengthen Canada
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau firmly rejected President-elect Donald Trump's repeated threats to annex Canada, calling them baseless and without merit. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Trudeau declared that there was "not a snowball's chance in hell" that Canada would ever become part of the United States. His response came after Trump renewed his calls for the U.S. to annex its northern neighbor, a move he proposed could be achieved through "economic force."
Trump's comments, made on Tuesday, suggested that eliminating the border between Canada and the United States could enhance both national security and economic stability. He added that such a union could be beneficial for both countries, implying that the existing border was "artificially drawn."

Trudeau, however, emphasized that Canada and the U.S. are strong partners when it comes to security, and he reiterated that the current arrangement works for both nations. He also noted that both countries benefit from their longstanding diplomatic and economic relationship.
Pierre Poilievre's Response: "Canada Will Never Be the 51st State"
Meanwhile, in response to Trump's annexation rhetoric, Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party and a likely contender for Prime Minister in Canada's upcoming elections, issued a strong statement rejecting the idea of Canada becoming part of the U.S. Poilievre declared, "Canada will never be the 51st state. Period."
He went on to emphasize Canada's independent strength and the crucial partnership it shares with the United States. "We are a great and independent country," Poilievre stated. "We are the best friend to the U.S. We spent billions of dollars and hundreds of lives helping Americans retaliate against Al-Qaeda's 9/11 attacks. We supply the U.S. with billions of dollars of high-quality and totally reliable energy well below market prices. We buy hundreds of billions of dollars of American goods."
Criticizing the current government, Poilievre referred to it as "weak and pathetic" for failing to highlight Canada's contributions to the U.S. He assured Canadians that, should he become Prime Minister, he would fight for Canada's sovereignty and security.
"When I am Prime Minister, we will rebuild our military and take back control of the border to secure both Canada and the U.S.," Poilievre promised. "We will take back control of our Arctic to keep Russia and China out. We will axe taxes, slash red tape and rapidly green-light massive resource projects to bring home paycheques and production to our country. In other words, we will put Canada First."
Canadian Leaders Push Back
Trudeau was not alone in rejecting Trump's annexation rhetoric. Political leaders across Canada, from various political parties, voiced strong opposition to the idea.
Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly condemned Trump's comments as a reflection of his "complete lack of understanding" of what makes Canada strong. She pointed out that Canada's economy and people are resilient, and that the country would not be intimidated by such threats.
Trump's Broader Remarks on Military Use
In addition to his comments about Canada, Trump also addressed his stance on military strategy concerning other regions.
He declined to rule out the potential use of military force in Greenland and the Panama Canal, territories he deemed crucial for U.S. economic and national security interests.
Trump criticized the U.S.-Danish deal over Greenland, suggesting that it undermined American interests. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen swiftly rejected any notion of selling Greenland, asserting that the people of Greenland do not wish to part with their land.
