Tragic Incident as Tourist Boats Capsize in Sudden Storm in Guizhou, China, Resulting in 10 Fatalities
A sudden storm led to the capsizing of four boats in southwestern China, resulting in 10 fatalities, according to state media reports on Monday. Over 80 individuals fell into a river when strong winds struck a scenic area in Guizhou province late Sunday afternoon, as reported by state broadcaster CCTV.

The incident occurred on the upper reaches of the Wu River, a tributary of the Yangtze River, following an unexpected rain and hailstorm. Initially, reports indicated that two tourist boats had overturned, but state media later confirmed that four vessels were involved. Two of these boats had no passengers, and their seven crew members managed to escape unharmed.
Tourism and Safety Concerns
Guizhou's mountainous landscapes and rivers are popular tourist attractions, drawing many visitors during the five-day national holiday that concluded on Monday. Chinese President Xi Jinping urged comprehensive efforts to locate the missing and provide care for the injured, as reported by the official Xinhua News Agency on Sunday.
Seventy individuals were transported to a hospital, with most sustaining minor injuries. President Xi highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures at tourist sites, large public venues, and residential areas, especially during peak travel periods at the end of major holidays.
Eyewitness Accounts and Rescue Efforts
An eyewitness informed state-owned Beijing News that although some people swam to safety, the waters were deep and a thick mist obscured visibility. The storm's sudden onset caught many off guard. CCTV noted that the capsized boats had a maximum capacity of about 40 people each and were not overloaded at the time of the incident.
A video shared by state media depicted a man performing CPR on another individual while one of the overturned vessels drifted upside down. This visual evidence highlights the chaos and urgency of rescue efforts during the storm.
In response to recent fatal accidents, President Xi emphasized strengthening safety protocols at tourist attractions and other public areas. This call for action aims to prevent similar tragedies in the future and ensure public safety during high-traffic periods.
The tragic event underscores the importance of preparedness and safety measures in tourist areas prone to sudden weather changes. As investigations continue, authorities are likely to implement stricter regulations to safeguard visitors in such regions.
