Thailand's Visa-Free Boost: 110 New Flights Weekly As Indian Travel Skyrockets!
The India-Thailand travel corridor is experiencing unprecedented growth as Thailand's indefinite extension of visa-free arrival for Indians catalyzes a surge in tourism. Initially announced in November 2023 for six months, the policy has since been extended multiple times, culminating in its indefinite continuation in November 202, as reported by Hindustan Times. This move has significantly boosted travel demand, prompting airlines to add up to 110 weekly flights by January 2025 compared to January 2024.
According to aviation analytics firm Cirium, this expansion equates to nearly 19,848 additional weekly seats in both directions. The connectivity boom is supported by the entry of new players like Thai VietJet and Nok Air, while Air India Express, a low-cost subsidiary of Air India, is set to debut flights between Surat, Pune, and Bangkok this December.

Expanding Network Across Cities
The India-Thailand route now spans 32 airport pairs, connecting 18 Indian cities to three key Thai destinations:
- Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi Airport)
- Bangkok (Don Mueang Airport)
- Phuket
Indian carriers dominate routes from Tier-I cities like Mumbai and Delhi, while Tier-II cities like Surat and Pune are beginning to see connectivity. Despite this, Indian airlines have yet to explore Thailand's secondary cities, which present untapped potential for further growth, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Rising Passenger Numbers
As of October 2024, Thailand had recorded 1.64 million Indian tourist arrivals, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. With the onset of the wedding season, followed by honeymoon travel and year-end holiday rush, arrivals are projected to exceed the pre-pandemic record of 1.96 million Indian tourists.
New Airlines and Routes Boost Demand
The addition of 110 weekly flights includes 91 services by new airlines or city pairs. Key entrants include:
- Thai VietJet: A subsidiary of VietJet, expanding its footprint in India.
- Nok Air: Rejoining the India-Thailand market with targeted services.
Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air: Subsidiaries of AirAsia Bhd and Lion Air, respectively, leveraging parent companies' presence to penetrate the market.
Indian airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, have also ramped up their operations. IndiGo, the leading Indian carrier on the route, now offers 84 weekly flights, adding routes like Pune-Bangkok. Air India Express is also making its mark by launching flights from Tier-II cities, such as Surat.
Competitive Market Dynamics
While IndiGo leads in frequency, Thai Airways holds a dominant position in seat capacity due to its use of wide-body aircraft on multiple routes, as per media reports. Thai AirAsia is the third-largest operator in both frequency and seat share. The market share for Indian carriers stands at 42% of all flights and 39.8% of seats between the two countries, leaving ample room for further growth.
India vs. China: A Comparative Analysis
China has traditionally been the largest source market for Thailand, but India is catching up rapidly. Currently, India-Thailand non-stop flights account for 369 weekly departures with 73,422 seats, reflecting a 14% rise in frequency and 11% increase in seat capacity since pre-pandemic levels. In contrast, China-Thailand flights are at 1,173 weekly departures with 212,271 seats, still 8% and 13% below pre-COVID levels, respectively.
Changing Travel Preferences
Indian travelers are increasingly choosing Thailand over other destinations like the Maldives, which has seen a decline in arrivals due to high costs. Data from Cleartrip indicates a 2.3x increase in bookings to Phuket year-on-year, driven by affordability and a diverse range of offerings-from vibrant nightlife to family-friendly attractions.
Airfares to Thailand have risen with demand but remain 16% lower than last year, making it a budget-friendly international destination. The visa-free arrival has also simplified travel, encouraging both leisure and business tourists.
Future Outlook
Thailand's strategic focus on attracting Indian travelers has reaped significant rewards, with bilateral agreements between the two countries allowing for increased flight frequencies, as per media reports. Given the current momentum, discussions to revise and expand these agreements are ongoing.
Both nations are utilizing their air travel rights extensively, and the potential for further growth remains strong. As Thailand continues to position itself as a premier destination for Indian travelers, airlines and governments must work together to meet the surging demand while maintaining affordability and service quality.
For now, Thailand remains a favorite destination, offering Indian tourists the perfect mix of leisure, cultural experiences, shopping, and entertainment. How much further this market can grow is only a matter of time.
