Taiwan President Lai Ching-te Arrives in Hawaii for Two-Day Visit Amid Tensions with Beijing
Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te has arrived in Hawaii for a two-day stopover in the US, marking his first trip to the South Pacific since taking office. This visit has sparked criticism from Beijing, which views Taiwan as its territory and opposes official interactions between Taiwan and the US, its main supporter and military ally.

US-Taiwan Relations
Arthur Chen, president of the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of North America, emphasized the strong ties between Taiwan and the US. He travelled from Dallas to Hawaii to welcome Lai, stating that despite US foreign policy considerations, Lai should be treated as a head of state. Chen highlighted shared values like democracy and human rights between the two nations.
Lai's itinerary includes visits to the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Palau, three of Taiwan's 12 formal diplomatic allies. Although Taiwan maintains informal relations with many countries, its official allies are limited. During his visit to Hawaii, Lai explored the Bishop Museum, a leading institution for natural history and Native Hawaiian culture.
Beijing's Reaction
China's Foreign Ministry expressed strong disapproval of Lai's visit and lodged a complaint with the US. It also condemned a recent US arms sale to Taiwan, claiming it violated China's sovereignty. The ministry stated that China would monitor developments closely and take necessary measures to protect its territorial integrity.
In Hawaii, Lai received a red lei hulu from Bishop Museum CEO Dee Jay Mailer. In return, he gifted a headdress made by Taiwan's Paiwan Indigenous people and decorative pieces crafted by the Atayal Indigenous community. These exchanges underscored cultural ties between Taiwan and Hawaii.
US Arms Sales to Taiwan
The US State Department recently approved a $385 million sale of spare parts for F-16s and tactical communication support to Taiwan. While the US is committed to helping Taiwan defend itself under the Taiwan Relations Act, it maintains strategic ambiguity about intervening if China invades Taiwan.
Before leaving Taiwan, Lai expressed his desire to use democratic values to strengthen cooperation with allies. He aims to showcase Taiwan as a model of democracy and a key player in global peace and prosperity. His remarks highlighted Taiwan's commitment to international partnerships.
Historical Context
When former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited the US last year en route to Latin America, China voiced strong opposition. Tsai met with then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy during her transit. Similarly, China's military conducted drills around Taiwan after Lai's previous US stopover as vice president.
The potential second term of Donald Trump could further strain US-China relations. Trump's administration imposed tariffs on over $360 billion worth of Chinese goods during his first term. The issue of Taiwan remains a significant point of contention in bilateral relations between the two nations.
Lai did not make public statements during his initial engagements in Hawaii but spoke at Taoyuan International Airport before departure. He emphasized expanding cooperation with allies based on democracy, peace, and prosperity principles. His visit underscores Taiwan's efforts to strengthen international ties amidst geopolitical tensions.
