Sunita Williams Rings In 2025 16 Times In Space: A Unique New Year Celebration Aboard The ISS
As the clock strikes midnight on December 31, 2024, Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams will experience a New Year like no other 16 times.
The Expedition 72 crew aboard the International Space Station (ISS) is set to witness 16 sunrises and sunsets while orbiting Earth at an altitude of about 400 kilometres, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will allow them to celebrate the dawn of 2025 multiple times.

A Rare New Year Celebration in Space
Sunita Williams, who has been aboard the ISS since June 2024, initially set out for a short eight-day mission aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. However, unforeseen technical challenges extended her stay, and she now expects to remain in space until March 2025. This extended mission means she and her crew will ring in the New Year multiple times as they circle the Earth approximately every 90 minutes, as reported by India Today.
The crew's celebrations won't be typical-they'll enjoy special meals, connect with loved ones through video calls, and indulge in holiday traditions like decorating and preparing festive treats. Despite the distance from home, the astronauts keep their spirits high by sharing heartfelt greetings for Christmas and New Year with families and fans worldwide.
A Space Commander's Joyful Experience
As the ISS Commander, Sunita Williams has embraced her unique role. She has previously described space as her "happy place," and the challenges of being away from home haven't dampened her enthusiasm for this extraordinary experience. Alongside her fellow astronauts, she has kept busy with scientific research while maintaining emotional well-being during their extended stay, as reported by India Today.
A Journey of Inspiration
The crew's experience underscores the marvels of space exploration. Despite the hardships of being away from Earth, these astronauts continue to push boundaries, celebrating each milestone with camaraderie and joy. As Williams and her team celebrate the arrival of 2025, they remind us of the boundless potential of human exploration and the resilience required to embark on such a remarkable journey, as per media reports.
Their continued mission in space not only inspires those on Earth but also showcases the power of teamwork, perseverance, and the universal human spirit-even in the farthest reaches of space.
