South Africa Submits Legal Claim to UN Court Accusing Israel of Genocide Against Palestinians

The South African legal team has submitted a substantial document, nearly 5,000 pages long, to the United Nations' top court. This is part of a case accusing Israel of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will not release the document until later in the proceedings. According to South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa, the document argues that Israel has a "special intent to commit genocide."

South Africa Accuses Israel of Genocide

Israel has strongly refuted these allegations, describing the case as "blood libel" when South Africa filed the complaint in December 2023. A court official at the ICJ confirmed receipt of the document on Monday. Meanwhile, the Israeli military has urged Palestinians to leave northern Gaza, where it has been conducting a significant offensive for over three weeks.

Humanitarian Concerns and International Reactions

The United Nations reported earlier this month that at least 400,000 people remain in northern Gaza. The region faces severe hunger due to a sharp decline in humanitarian aid reaching the area over the past month. The Hague-based court has issued three rounds of emergency measures so far, instructing Israel to stop its military actions in Rafah and open more land crossings for aid into Gaza.

South Africa claims that Israel has not adhered to these orders. "Israel's continued shredding of international law has imperiled the institutions of global governance that were established to hold all states accountable," stated President Ramaphosa. Several countries, including Palestine, Spain, and Chile, along with seven others, have requested to join this case.

Background and Future Proceedings

Israel initiated its military operations in Gaza following an attack by Hamas-led militants on October 7, 2023. This attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and the abduction of 250 others. In response to South Africa's legal action, Israel now has until July 2025 to submit its reply to the ICJ.

The ongoing conflict and legal proceedings highlight significant international tensions and humanitarian concerns. The situation remains complex as various nations seek involvement in the case while addressing urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza.
