While the likelihood of a recession in the United States appears to be diminishing, small businesses continue to encounter obstacles such as rising costs and difficulties in retaining skilled workers. However, according to a recent survey conducted by American Express, small business owners remain optimistic as they enter 2024.
Survey Highlights
The survey revealed that 85% of small businesses expressed satisfaction with their overall success, and 86% reported achieving their business goals for 2023. This stands in contrast to August 2023, when 80% of small businesses surveyed indicated that their long-term financial confidence was negatively impacted by the economy.
Resilience and Proactive Measures
Gina Taylor, Executive Vice President and General Manager of American Express Small Business Products and Business Blueprint, commented on the resilience and dedication demonstrated by small businesses amidst uncertain economic conditions. The survey findings suggest that small businesses anticipate a positive 2024 and are taking proactive steps, including hiring and implementing new tools, to maintain their competitiveness.
Growth Plans and Hiring Challenges
Approximately 50% of the small businesses surveyed have plans to grow or expand their operations in 2024. However, only 28% indicated plans to hire additional employees. The challenge of hiring and retaining qualified workers persists for many small businesses, as larger companies often have the advantage of offering higher salaries and more benefits.
Attracting and Retaining Employees
In an effort to attract and retain quality employees, 57% of the respondents identified flexible work options as their primary strategy for 2024. This reflects the growing importance of work-life balance and flexibility in the current job market.
Small businesses in the United States continue to navigate challenges such as rising costs and hiring difficulties. Despite these obstacles, the survey findings from American Express indicate a sense of optimism among small business owners as they look ahead to 2024. By implementing proactive measures, including flexible work options, small businesses are demonstrating their resilience and dedication to achieving success.
