Renting Boyfriends In Vietnam: Young People Navigate Societal Pressures To Marry

In Vietnam, a new trend has emerged among young people who face societal pressure to marry. Many are now renting boyfriends to satisfy family expectations and avoid the stigma of being single. This practice has gained traction on social media, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

Minh Thu, a 30-year-old professional, felt immense pressure from her parents to introduce a boyfriend during the Lunar New Year celebrations. Unable to find a suitable partner, she hired someone to act as her boyfriend. The man impressed her family with his domestic skills and social charm.

Renting Boyfriends: A Growing Trend

Khanh Ngoc also turned to this solution. She rented a younger, attractive man who won over her parents during a visit. This experience improved her relationship with them significantly. For many young Vietnamese women, renting a boyfriend offers temporary relief from societal expectations.

Huy Tuan, aged 25, has capitalised on this trend by becoming a "fake boyfriend" for hire. He undergoes extensive training to meet various client needs, ranging from casual dates to family events. His services have become increasingly popular among those seeking temporary partners.

Potential Risks and Emotional Complexities

Despite its popularity, experts warn about the potential risks involved in renting partners. Nguyen Thanh Nga from the Academy of Journalism and Communication in Vietnam highlighted that if such arrangements are exposed, families might suffer emotional harm and lose trust. Additionally, these arrangements lack legal protection in Vietnam.

The trend has sparked widespread discussion online. One observer noted that marrying without career success can lead to problems, suggesting that renting a partner is beneficial as it pleases parents while reducing personal pressure.

Diverse Opinions on Social Media

However, not everyone agrees with this approach. Another commenter expressed concern about the potential heartbreak for parents if they discover the truth behind these arrangements. The emotional complexities surrounding rented relationships remain a topic of debate.

This trend reflects broader societal pressures faced by young Vietnamese individuals today. While renting partners may offer short-term solutions, it raises questions about authenticity and long-term implications for familial relationships.
