Pro-Israel Lawmaker Arrested for Carrying Handgun at Student Protest
I
In a surprising turn of events in New York City, Inna Vernikov, a pro-Israel Republican member of the City Council was arrested on Friday for bringing a handgun to a student demonstration supporting Palestinians. The incident took place at Brooklyn College where Vernikov was seen with the butt of a pistol jutting out from her waistband, as per reports from the New York Police Department.

Vernikov turned herself in on Friday morning following which she was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon. She had obtained a license last month to carry concealed weapons and surrendered her firearm post arrest. As per New York law, licensed gun owners are prohibited from carrying weapons to certain sensitive locations such as protests and school grounds. Furthermore, they are required to keep their handguns hidden from public view.
No Immediate Response From Vernikov
The lawmaker did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment regarding the incident. Calls made to her district office in Brooklyn went unanswered on Friday. Even her City Council office in Manhattan didn't return any immediate response.
Council Speaker's Reaction
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams described Vernikov’s conduct as "unacceptable and unlawful," adding that she had referred the matter to an ethics body for further investigation.
Tensions Escalate Amid Protests
New York City has been witness to several dueling protests recently following the Hamas attack on Israel and escalating war in Gaza. Notably, top elected officials including New York City Mayor and New York Governor Kathy Hochul have condemned these pro-Palestinian demonstrations labeling them as celebrations of Hamas. The rising tensions have also led to attacks including assaults on people holding Palestinian flags according to police reports.
Vernikov’s Stance on Palestinian Activists
Vernikov, who is Jewish and was raised in Ukraine, has been vocal about her opposition to Palestinian activists. She has gone as far as describing the protesters as "terrorists" and accusing them of making Jewish students feel unsafe.
Reactions From Palestinian Activist
Nerdeen Kiswani, a Palestinian activist and CUNY law school graduate said that Vernikov’s actions were an extension of citywide rhetoric that dehumanizes Palestinian concerns and stifles dissent. "She falsely accuses us of being antisemitic then shows up to a rally brandishing a gun," Kiswana added. "Who is really making us unsafe?" she questioned.
In conclusion, this incident highlights the escalating tensions between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian factions within New York City's public domain. The arrest of Council Member Inna Vernikov serves as a stark reminder of the need for peaceful dialogue and respect for law during such turbulent times. As per latest reports, Vernikov will have to return to court at a later date.
