Prime Minister Narendra Modi Visits Bhutan, Emphasizing India's Neighbourhood First Policy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a two-day visit to Bhutan, highlighting India's commitment to its 'Neighbourhood First Policy'. This trip, initially planned for Thursday, was rescheduled to Friday due to adverse weather conditions in Bhutan. The visit underscores the tradition of high-level exchanges between India and Bhutan, aiming to strengthen their long-standing relationship. It is noteworthy as PM Modi's potential last foreign visit during his second term, following closely after the Bhutanese Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's five-day visit to India.

India and Bhutan share a deep bond of mutual trust, respect, and cooperation. This relationship is anchored in the India-Bhutan Friendship Treaty of 1949, updated in 2007, and the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1968. India has been a key partner in Bhutan's socio-economic development since the 1960s, providing financial assistance for its Five-Year Plans. During Bhutanese PM Tobgay's recent visit to India, PM Modi reaffirmed India's support for Bhutan's 12th Five Year Plan.

PM Modis Strategic Visit to Bhutan

The collaboration between India and Bhutan extends beyond economic aid to include hydropower projects, infrastructure development, health, education, digital connectivity, and space exploration. PM Modi expressed his anticipation for further strengthening the India-Bhutan partnership through various programs and discussions with Bhutanese leaders during his visit.

PM Modi's trip to Bhutan occurs amidst the electoral process in India, limiting the possibility of major policy announcements. However, the visit signifies the importance India places on its relationship with Thimphu. Meetings with Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, former King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and PM Sher Bahadur Deuba are scheduled. Discussions are likely to include India's support for Bhutan's 'Gelephu Mindfulness City' project and other bilateral connectivity projects.

Bhutan's strategic importance to India is highlighted by concerns over China's growing influence in the region. The Doklam plateau dispute exemplifies the security implications for India regarding any territorial adjustments between China and Bhutan. India remains vigilant over China's attempts to establish diplomatic ties with Bhutan and any developments in the ongoing boundary talks between China and Bhutan.
