Prime Minister Narendra Modi was received by Brunei's Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin, during his visit to the iconic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan on Tuesday.
The mosque, which was completed in 1958, was named after Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei, who initiated its construction.

PM Modi's Brunei Visit: Mosque Tour, High Commission Inauguration
The Minister of Health, Dato Dr Haji Mohammad Isham, was also present at the event. The inauguration of the new building for the Indian high commission in Brunei was marked by Prime Minister Modi lighting a lamp and unveiling a plaque. Members of the Indian community were present to greet him, and his appreciation for their role in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries was expressed.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi interacted with the Indian community and acknowledged their contribution as a living bridge between India and Brunei. The first phase of Indian migration to Brunei began with the discovery of oil in the 1920s, and currently, approximately 14,000 Indians reside in the country. The significant contributions of Indian doctors and teachers to Brunei's healthcare and education sectors have been recognized.
The chancery complex of the Indian high commission, designed to reflect a profound sense of Indianness, features traditional motifs and lush tree plantations. The use of elegant claddings and durable Kota stones enhances the aesthetic appeal of the building, which blends classic and contemporary elements harmoniously. The design not only honors India's rich cultural heritage but also creates a tranquil and inviting atmosphere.
Prime Minister Modi's visit to Brunei is part of a broader agenda that includes holding talks with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, focusing on cooperation in areas such as space and energy. The strategic importance of Brunei to India's space program has been highlighted by the establishment of a telemetry tracking and command station in the country in 2000, which supports the tracking and monitoring of eastward satellite and rocket launches. The Indian government aims to secure long-term and predictable arrangements for gas supplies from Brunei.
In a statement made before departing from New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that Brunei and Singapore are considered "important partners" in India's 'Act East' policy, and the visits are expected to further strengthen India's partnership with these nations and the broader ASEAN region.
