Plane Carrying Fuel Crashes Near Fairbanks After Reporting Onboard Fire
A tragic incident occurred just outside Fairbanks, where a plane crash resulted in the death of both pilots on board. The aircraft, carrying a significant load of fuel, encountered an emergency situation shortly after takeoff, leading to a fatal accident near the Tanana River. Clint Johnson, the head of the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) Alaska regional office, confirmed the pilots had reported a fire on board before losing contact and ultimately crashing about 7 miles from Fairbanks.

The ill-fated flight departed Fairbanks International Airport just before 10 a.m., destined for Kobuk, an Inupiat village. It was loaded with 3,200 gallons of heating oil and approximately 1,200 gallons of aviation fuel. The C54D-DC Skymaster plane, a converted World War II-era freighter, met its demise on a steep hill, sliding down an embankment to the river's bank. Alaska State Troopers have confirmed that no survivors were found at the crash site.
Transporting fuel to remote Alaskan villages like Kobuk poses significant challenges and costs due to the state's limited road system. In 2022, the price of heating fuel in Kobuk soared to USD 15.45 a gallon, highlighting the difficulties of supply in these isolated communities. The Alaska Energy Authority notes that while barges usually deliver fuel to coastal areas, air tankers are often the only feasible delivery method for inland villages, restricted further by environmental conditions such as sea or river ice and water levels.
The C54D-DC Skymaster is a military adaptation of the Douglas DC-4, a prominent aircraft during World War II. According to www.airlines.net, these planes were originally designed to seat 44 passengers but have since been predominantly converted for freight purposes. The NTSB has dispatched three investigators to the crash site to determine the cause of the incident.
The aircraft was registered to Alaska Air Fuel based in Wasilla. Attempts to reach the company for comment have so far been unsuccessful. The identities of the pilots have not yet been disclosed as investigations continue into this tragic event that underscores the risks and challenges associated with delivering essential supplies to Alaska's remote communities.
