Pete Hegseth Commits to Establishing 'Warrior Culture' at Pentagon if Confirmed as Defence Secretary
Pete Hegseth, chosen by President-elect Donald Trump for the role of defence secretary, pledged to instil a "warrior culture" at the Pentagon. During a Senate confirmation hearing, he described himself as a "change agent." The session was marked by both protests and support from veterans. Hegseth emphasised his military background but initially avoided addressing allegations of sexual misconduct and controversial views on women and minorities.

Senators questioned Hegseth about these allegations. He dismissed the sexual assault claim as a "smear campaign" but didn't directly address other accusations. The Republican chairman of the Armed Services Committee acknowledged Hegseth's unconventional nomination, while the top Democrat expressed concern over the serious allegations against him.
Senate Scrutiny and Allegations
Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican, likened Hegseth to Trump, dismissing the allegations as baseless. He praised Hegseth for bringing new ideas to challenge bureaucracy. However, Senator Jack Reed, a Democrat, stated bluntly that he doubted Hegseth's qualifications for the demanding role. Despite his military experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, Hegseth's past statements about women and minorities have raised concerns.
Hegseth promised not to consume alcohol if confirmed. Trump expressed full support for his nominee in a morning post. The Senate Armed Services Committee hearing marked the beginning of a week-long examination of Trump's top administrative picks. Hegseth is considered one of Trump's most vulnerable nominees due to his controversial history.
Support and Opposition
Outside groups, including those linked with the Heritage Foundation, are campaigning to support Hegseth's nomination. The hearing saw both supporters wearing military-themed clothing and protesters who briefly disrupted proceedings before being removed. The Republican-majority Senate aims to confirm some of Trump's nominees by January 20, Inauguration Day, despite potential bipartisan opposition.
Hegseth faces significant challenges in securing confirmation. He has denied sexual assault allegations and defended his past comments that diverge from mainstream military views. When questioned about diversity initiatives and women in combat roles, he acknowledged the military's history of racial integration but argued that current policies cause division rather than promoting meritocracy.
Senator Kristen Gillibrand challenged Hegseth on his views about women in combat roles. She criticised his past comments as disrespectful to those serving in the military. In response to Reed's questioning about a "jagoff," Hegseth explained it referred to a military lawyer prioritising personal interests over warfighters.
Background and Experience
Many senators have yet to meet with Hegseth or review his FBI background check, which committee leaders found lacking in new information. This hearing follows a pattern seen during Trump's first term when Brett Kavanaugh faced intense scrutiny but ultimately secured confirmation as Supreme Court justice.
Senator Tommy Tuberville expressed confidence in overcoming criticism against Hegseth at an event with former military personnel supporting him. Initially unknown on Capitol Hill, Hegseth gained attention through his role as co-host on Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends Weekend." His military service includes deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, earning two Bronze Stars.
In 2017, a woman accused Hegseth of sexual assault; he denied wrongdoing and settled confidentially to avoid litigation. If confirmed, he would oversee a vast military organisation facing global crises and domestic challenges like recruitment and funding issues.
The defence secretary plays a crucial role in advising the president on national security matters and managing an extensive budget and personnel. They ensure troops are ready for deployment while addressing domestic concerns such as housing and healthcare for service members.
Pentagon leaders frequently engage with international counterparts on security issues like military aid and counterterrorism efforts. They also contribute significantly to NATO partnerships across regions.
