Pelosi Backs Kamala Harris as Democratic Party's Presidential Candidate
Top Democratic leader and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s presidential nominee on Monday. This endorsement follows President Joe Biden's decision to step aside, amid concerns within the party about his ability to defeat Republican Donald Trump.

Biden announced on Sunday that he would not seek re-election, paving the way for Harris, 59, to likely become the Democratic party's presidential nominee. Other top party leaders, including former president Bill Clinton, have also endorsed her.
Pelosi's Endorsement
Pelosi, 84, expressed immense pride and optimism for the country's future in her endorsement statement. She highlighted Harris's strength and courage as a champion for working families and women's rights. "Today, it is with immense pride and limitless optimism for our country’s future that I endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States," Pelosi stated.
Pelosi's endorsement is significant due to her influential status within the Democratic Party. She emphasized Harris's strong values, faith, and commitment to public service. "Personally, I have known Kamala Harris for decades as rooted in strong values, faith and a commitment to public service," she said.
Political Impact
Biden's exit has caused a major shift in the presidential contest, disrupting both major political parties' plans for the 2024 race. Prominent Democratic elected officials, party leaders, and political organisations quickly rallied behind Harris after Biden's announcement.
Pelosi also praised Harris's political acumen and expressed confidence in her ability to lead the party to victory. "Politically, make no mistake: Kamala Harris as a woman in politics is brilliantly astute – and I have full confidence that she will lead us to victory in November," Pelosi added.
The swift alignment of Democratic leaders behind Harris aims to quell weeks of intra-party drama over Biden's candidacy. The 81-year-old president's decision to step aside was driven by concerns about his fitness for office.
In conclusion, with endorsements from key figures like Pelosi and Clinton, Harris is poised to become the Democratic party's presidential nominee. The party now looks forward to uniting behind her candidacy for the upcoming election.
