Palestinian Government Asserts Readiness to Govern Gaza Strip and West Bank Amid UN Discussions
The Palestinian government has announced its readiness to assume control over the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. It plans to manage border crossings with the help of the European Union and Egypt. Varsen Aghabekian, the Palestinian minister of state for foreign affairs, shared this at a UN Security Council meeting on Gaza. She also highlighted the need for urgent humanitarian assistance and support in training and equipping Palestinian security forces.

Reut Shapir Ben Naftaly, Israel's political coordinator at the UN, stated that the conflict will persist until all hostages are freed and Hamas's capacity to instill fear is dismantled. She noted that Iran's allies, including Hamas and Hezbollah in Lebanon, have faced severe setbacks. Additionally, Iran's terror network, which includes the Houthis in Yemen, has encountered significant challenges.
Palestinian Government's Commitment
Aghabekian expressed optimism that the ongoing six-week ceasefire could pave the way for a permanent ceasefire. She hopes it will establish a political path to end Israel's occupation within a year, as urged by the International Court of Justice. The Palestinian government is open to receiving any form of assistance that can help strengthen its police and security forces.
Ben Naftaly emphasized that Israel has no desire for conflict with Syria. However, she stressed that Israel will not accept any situation that threatens its civilians or allows Iran to re-establish itself in the region. She also mentioned concerns about Iran transferring weapons to Hezbollah.
Regional Dynamics and Security Concerns
The Middle East is at a critical juncture, according to Ben Naftaly. Iran's proxies have experienced substantial losses, impacting their operations across the region. The situation underscores the complex security dynamics involving multiple actors in the Middle East.
The Palestinian government's willingness to take responsibility for Gaza and the West Bank marks a significant step towards regional stability. Their collaboration with international partners aims to ensure effective management of crossing points and enhance security measures.
This development reflects ongoing efforts to address longstanding issues in the region. The focus remains on achieving lasting peace and security through diplomatic channels and international cooperation.
