Pakistanis Celebrate Raj Kapoor's 100th Birth Anniversary at Historic Kapoor House in Peshawar

Film enthusiasts and cultural aficionados gathered at the historic Kapoor House in Peshawar to honour the 100th birth anniversary of Raj Kapoor, a legendary figure in Bollywood. The event featured a cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate Kapoor's centenary, highlighting Peshawar's significant ties to cinematic history. This celebration underscored Kapoor's enduring influence on Indian cinema.

The World Bank's announcement to allocate Rs 100 million each for restoring the ancestral homes of Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar was warmly received by attendees. These homes, located near Qissa Khawani Bazaar, are emblematic of Peshawar's deep connection to Indian cinema. The restoration efforts aim to preserve these cultural landmarks for future generations.

Celebrating Cinematic Heritage

The event was organised by the Cultural Heritage Council (CHC) and the Directorate of Archaeology Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Participants called for larger-scale events to commemorate Kapoor's legacy. They emphasised his connection to Pakistan, as he was born in Peshawar's Dhaki Nalbandi, and praised his lasting impact on cinema.

Muhammad Hussain Haidery, Secretary of the Pak-Iran Trade and Investment Council, served as the chief guest. His presence highlighted the importance of cultural ties between nations. The gathering aimed to strengthen these bonds through shared cinematic heritage.

Insights into Raj Kapoor's Legacy

Ibrahim Zia, a respected writer and researcher on Indian cinema, presented rare photographs of Raj Kapoor from his early years in Peshawar. He shared insights into Kapoor's illustrious career, which began in the 1940s. Zia highlighted Kapoor’s versatility across genres like romance, comedy, and tragedy.

Kapoor's ability to excel in diverse roles earned him the title "Greatest Showman of Indian Cinema." His work continues to inspire filmmakers and actors worldwide. The event celebrated this legacy while fostering appreciation for cinematic history.
