Pakistani Student Visa Holder Charged with New York Jewish Center Attack Plot
A Pakistani man, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 20, was arrested in Quebec last week for allegedly planning an attack on a Jewish centre in Brooklyn. Canada's Immigration Minister Marc Miller revealed that Khan entered Canada on a student visa issued in May 2023 and arrived in Toronto in June. Miller refrained from providing further details due to the ongoing court case.

Authorities in the U.S. claim Khan intended to use firearms and knives for a mass shooting to support the Islamic State group. This attack was reportedly planned for the one-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack, which triggered the latest Middle East conflict. The Conservative opposition in Canada has been pressing the government for answers on how Khan was permitted entry into the country.
Security Concerns and Government Response
Miller emphasised the seriousness with which Canada treats security breaches and unauthorised entries. "We take any security breach and any entry into Canada very seriously," he stated. He acknowledged that determined individuals might still gain access but stressed that it is up to Canadian security services to apprehend such individuals if they commit or are about to commit a crime.
Miller praised Canadian police forces for their role in arresting Khan, stating, "Canada's police forces did their jobs by arresting the individual, and we will let the court case take its course." This statement underscores the government's confidence in its law enforcement agencies' ability to handle such threats effectively.
Previous Terror Plots
Earlier this year, another terror plot was foiled in Toronto involving a father and son duo. Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi, who holds Canadian citizenship, and his son Mostafa Eldidi were arrested for allegedly planning a terror attack. The father is also accused of committing an aggravated assault in 2015 outside Canada for the benefit of the Islamic State group.
The recent arrests highlight ongoing concerns about terrorism and security within Canada. These incidents have prompted calls for stricter immigration controls and enhanced security measures to prevent similar threats in the future.
The Conservative opposition continues to demand transparency from the government regarding how individuals like Khan are able to enter Canada. They argue that more stringent vetting processes are necessary to ensure national security.
The case against Khan remains under judicial review, with authorities closely monitoring developments. The situation underscores the importance of vigilance and robust security protocols to safeguard against potential threats.
The government's response to these incidents reflects its commitment to maintaining national security while balancing immigration policies. As investigations proceed, further details may emerge, shedding light on how such plots are conceived and thwarted.
The recent events serve as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by extremist groups and the need for continuous vigilance by both law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
