Pakistani City Mourns Loss of 42 Shiite Muslims in Deadly Gun Attack

In Pakistan's northwest, tensions escalated following the funeral prayers for 42 Shiite Muslims ambushed and killed by gunmen. The attack occurred on Thursday as the victims were travelling from Parachinar to Peshawar in a convoy. Among the deceased were six women, and 20 others sustained injuries. Survivors recounted that the attackers emerged from a vehicle and opened fire on the convoy.

Mourning for 42 Shiite Muslims in Pakistan

In Kurram, where Shiite Muslims are the majority, sectarian violence has been a recurring issue. Recent months have seen numerous fatalities due to clashes between Shiite and Sunni Muslims. The attack on Thursday is one of the deadliest in recent years, yet no group has claimed responsibility, and authorities have not determined a motive.

Sectarian Tensions and Community Response

The Shiite community in Parachinar, led by Anjuman Hussainia Parachinar, declared three days of mourning. Coffins adorned with white cloth and red calligraphy reading "Labbaik ya Hussein" were carried through the streets. This phrase commemorates the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Hussein. The city came to a standstill as markets, shops, roads, and schools closed in respect.

Protests erupted in parts of Parachinar with demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans. Some protesters set fire to check posts and the city's entrance gate. Elders urged for calm amidst the unrest. Ali Ghulam, who lost his nephew in the attack, expressed concern for his family’s future, describing his nephew as an innocent man who left behind young children.

Escalating Violence in Kurram

A senior police officer reported that clashes broke out between rival tribes following the funerals in Parachinar. Sunni and Shiite tribes targeted each other across various areas of Kurram district. Although there were casualties, exact numbers remain unconfirmed. The officer spoke anonymously as he was not authorised to discuss the matter publicly.

Shiite Muslims constitute about 15% of Pakistan's 240 million population, predominantly Sunni. While both communities generally coexist peacefully, tensions persist in certain regions like Kurram. Since July, a land dispute has sparked broader sectarian violence resulting in numerous deaths on both sides.

The bodies of those killed began arriving in Parachinar on Thursday evening. Tribal elder Jalal Bangash noted this sombre event as locals carried coffins through crowded streets. Relatives of victims staged sit-ins demanding justice for their loved ones.

The ongoing sectarian strife underscores longstanding animosities between Sunni and Shiite communities in Pakistan. Despite efforts for peace, incidents like these highlight deep-rooted divisions that continue to challenge societal harmony.
