Pakistan, Iran Pledge to Resolve Tensions Through Dialogue
Pakistans top leadership, including the caretaker prime minister and military chiefs, held a high-level meeting to discuss the recent tensions with Iran. The meeting concluded that both countries are committed to resolving any issues through dialogue and diplomacy, signaling a de-escalation of the situation.
In a significant development, Pakistan's top civil-military leadership convened a high-level meeting on Friday, January 19, to address the recent tensions with neighboring Iran. The meeting, chaired by Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, concluded that the "minor irritants" between the two countries would be mutually resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, signaling a de-escalation of the unprecedented tensions that had arisen.

NSC Meeting Reviews Security Situation
The National Security Council (NSC) meeting brought together services chiefs, cabinet ministers, and other officials to review the security situation. The participants were briefed on the political and diplomatic developments surrounding the prevailing situation between Pakistan and Iran, as well as its impact on regional security. The meeting commended the armed forces' professional, calibrated, and proportionate response to the unprovoked and unlawful violation of Pakistan's sovereignty.
Operation Marg Bar Sarmachar
The meeting also took stock of the successful execution of 'Operation Marg Bar Sarmachar,' which targeted Pakistani-originated Baloch terrorists residing in ungoverned spaces within Iran. Updates on the situation along the borders and the comprehensive preparations undertaken to respond to any further violation of national sovereignty were also discussed.
Dialogue and Diplomacy to Overcome Tensions
The NSC meeting concluded that, in line with the universal principles governing good neighborly relations, Pakistan and Iran would mutually overcome minor irritants through dialogue and diplomacy. This approach aims to pave the way for further deepening their historic relations, which have been strained by recent events.
Precision Military Strikes and Iranian Response
The meeting acknowledged the precision military strikes conducted by Pakistan against terrorist hideouts in Iran's Siestan-Balochistan province, which resulted in the loss of nine lives. This action was seen as a retaliation to Iranian missile and drone attacks on two bases of the Sunni Baloch militant group Jaish al-Adl in Pakistan's Balochistan province.
Cabinet Meeting and Foreign Affairs Briefing
Following the NSC meeting, the cabinet convened under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Kakar. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided a briefing on the situation arising from the Iranian attack on Pakistan. The cabinet lauded the professionalism displayed by the Pakistan Armed Forces in responding to the breach of sovereignty and commended the unified response of the government machinery.
Pakistan's Commitment to Peaceful Relations
Prime Minister Kakar emphasized Pakistan's commitment to being a law-abiding and peace-loving country. He reiterated Pakistan's desire for friendly and cooperative relations with all countries, particularly its neighbors. He highlighted the historic fraternal and cooperative relations between Pakistan and Iran, marked by respect and affection. The prime minister stressed the importance of taking steps to restore the relationship to its pre-January 16 state.
The high-level meetings in Pakistan have signaled a shift towards resolving tensions with Iran through dialogue and diplomacy. Both countries recognize the importance of maintaining good neighborly relations and utilizing existing communication channels to address security concerns. By prioritizing peaceful resolution, Pakistan and Iran aim to restore their historic ties and contribute to regional peace and stability.
