The Awami National Party (ANP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazlur (JUI-F) have announced their decision not to participate in the upcoming elections for the posts of president, prime minister, and speaker of the national assembly in Pakistan, citing concerns over the lack of true representation and the excessive use of money in the electoral process.

Peshawar, Mar 1: The Awami National Party (ANP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazlur (JUI-F) have announced their decision not to participate in the upcoming elections for the posts of president, prime minister, and speaker of the national assembly in Pakistan. The parties allege that the new parliament is not controlled by the true representatives of the people.
ANP's Stance
ANP president Asfandyar Wali Khan made the announcement through a statement issued on Thursday night. He expressed concerns that the new parliament is not controlled by the genuine representatives of the nation and that the party will not participate in the elections for these posts.
Khan, 75, emphasized the party's commitment to civilian supremacy, strong democracy, and a robust parliament in the country. He alleged that the massive use of money in the present elections has no precedent in the parliamentary history of Pakistan.
The ANP stated that it is not in a position to take sides in the elections for the national assembly, provincial assemblies, and the senate due to the current situation. Khan revealed that the party has been offered lucrative positions by parties with a majority in parliament, but they do not believe in politics driven by power and seats.
JUI-F's Position
JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman had previously announced on Thursday that the party would not participate in the elections for the posts of president, prime minister, and speaker. He echoed similar concerns about the lack of true representation in the new parliament.
Upcoming Elections
According to Pakistani officials, the new Prime Minister of Pakistan is expected to take the oath of office by March 5. The elections for the selection of Speaker and Deputy Speaker are scheduled for March 1.
It is noteworthy that jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party-backed independent candidates won more than 90 seats in the 266-member National Assembly. The party has alleged massive rigging during the elections.
The decisions by ANP and JUI-F to boycott the elections for key positions in Pakistan's parliament highlight the ongoing political tensions and concerns about the legitimacy of the electoral process. These developments add uncertainty to the political landscape as the country prepares for the formation of a new government.
